so yea today while at the cage builder giving the car some thrashing and when i came back heard some knocking at idle.

I couldnt tell where it was coming from however.

I hadnt started the car in about two weeks.

The knocking is at idle only and once i rev it the noise goes away.

Oil pressure is consistent 35-40 psi @ idle 85-90 psi @ 3000 rpm.

What are my chances rod or lifter??

thoughts?

Any chance of pulling codes or is that not an option?

Well it should be pretty apparent between a rod and lifter. Lifters are usually high pitched and a "clean" sound. Rod knocks are usually a "thud" dull sound. By lifter I think you mean HLA and should sound like a click, kinda like Mettlers video of his first firing of his engine.

with engine running (idle) disconnect one coil pack wiring harness clip at a time and then reconnect it. If you find that disconnecting one suddenly gets rid of the knocking noise, you've likely found a bad rod bearing. Do a compression test on that cylinder and a few others to verify valves/piston are ok.

Does it also knock with clutch pedal pushed in?

unfourtantly the car is 250 miles away at mazworx getting the roll bar put in so i cant test things as of right now, ill get the car back in two weeks.

I do know that pushing the clutch in the noise did NOT go away.

well, then it is most likely engine related... not a bad input shaft bearing or something of the like.

had some time to investigate today

when i pull the coil pack on the passenger side 3rd cylnder from the front knocking goes away.

Also it makes a slight tap at idle but becomes very apparent at 2500 rpm.

Rod bearings, ugh

im gonna go drink myself to sleep tonight. Was hoping this one would last till i got the other built ....... ugh

I'm gonna drain the oil and put in the thickest oil I can find along with a quart of Lucas in there see if it quotes it down a little so I can at least drive it to the alignment shop ilans body shop for paint because its gonna be a pain to have to trailer it to all those places.

If not I'm just gonna get some new vents installed in my block courtesy of the connecting rod.

Maybe it will lower your underhood temp? Go for it!

No Lucas additive! That stuff is not good. Check out the bobistheoilguy website for more details and his test results of the Lucas oil additive. If it's audible knocking, the rod bearing is long gone.

yeah, your best bet to have the motor live to get you to the paint shop and back would be to unplug that injector, take that coil pack out, and take the spark plug out. It will be LOUD and you will sound like a cessna prop plane, but I had to do this before and I was able to drive about 40 miles home with a bad rod without it seizing or breaking.

Being you got a playground of vehicles. You able to find 2 94+ if you don't have time no problem. I just need one with wiring harness ecu and mafs.
