You might just have a loose spark plug. Check that before pulling the cover off...

There is a plate on top of the timing chain and its probably broke .Just take the valve cover off, take the plate off and the two screws that was holding the plate. You can get another plate and replace it or just leave it like that. I did mine and left it with no plate. It works just fine with out it.

Yeah the same thing happened on my friends '91. The cover broke and was hitting stuff making the knocking noise, sounded way worse that it really was.

It's toards the front, but i pulled all of the sparks, and checked em and put em back in. The knockin stopped for now, but imma check it tomorrow to make sure it's gone, and if i pull the valve cover off would i need to get new gaskets? If so about how much do they cost?

you should get a new gasket if u pulled the cover off. i don't know how much it is, probably u have to go to the dealer for that.

schucks auto supply...get a gasket from there, save you about $4000 from a dealer for a stupid gasket. answer this question, does the knocking sound get louder as you rev the engine? or is it just a constant knock? do what we suggested before, make sure the timing chain cover isn't loose/broke and knocking around.

Hey guysI know this is a real;ly old thread. But im having the same problem. I jsut finsih replacing my head on my car. And i started the car and it sounded fine with no problems. then i shut it off . and the next day i turned it on and reved the engine i let it get hot. Also i did rev the engine up the first day i started it and it sounded perfect. We did have a problem that while it was idling. IT would idle at 1000 and the it would start going down and shaking like crazy and bogged off. IT wouldnt stay on unless i gave a little throttle. I am not to sure what is wrong with the idle but ill figure that out.

BUt then the second day i turned it on. It turned on fine and at idle made no noise. but then we reved it up. and you hear a nocking noise. a loud *** nock. like if it was a blown rod. And we turned the engine off. Turned it back on, and the noise was there again when we reved it up. and everytime we reved it it got louder and louder. i finallly decided to turn it off. and when i tried to turn it on again it didnt turn on. it seemed like if the timing came off.Well if you guys can help me with that it would be great. I have searched around and cant find anythign exactly with my problem.ThanksAlex
