hey all Im getting this 92 Q45 right, and it has a knock sound to it. Now the knock sound is not really loud but you can here it. It knocks when its at a high idle like when I rev it. but other than that the car looks good all power, might need refill on a/c, need tail light bulb, and thats about it. it has i think 18' rims I dont like them but w/e (there those pizza slice lookin rims ya know) anyway any ideas what it could be? And worst case how much would it be to fix. I'm getting the car for $700 so let me know what yall think. TY

Read up and find out if the timing chain guides have been replaced, if not even at $700 it's not a good deal.

Welcome to Nico. I see you're looking at a 92. If I were you, I'd check to see if the chain guides have been done. Al 90-93 Qs came with plastic chain guides that break and fail. It will make the timing chain jump and you can ruin the engine. Very expensive to repair. Read up about chain guide here in Nico and see if it's worth it to you to get this Q. If the guides were done, and the Q is $700 bucks then it looks like a good deal, just have a bit of extra cash around to take care of other things that might have to be done. Try to get a service history at the dealer if possible. Good luck.

You will save yourself a lot of expense if you read the how to buy a Q45 in the Articles Forum.

Be sure you have an extra $6K to correct deferred maintenance.

I used to scoff at people that said you ahd to put $6,000.00 into a used Q. Then I added up all the money I put in Layla, after her initial purchase price of $2,300.00. It was a little over $6,000.00 more

When I bought Lola, I said, "She is in such good shape, I won't have to put much money in her." I paid $4,500.00 for her, and have a little over $6,000.00 more in her, with another $3,000.00 going in in the next 60 days.

Of couse, not all of it was maintenance or repairs. if I was just going to buy the car and drive it, I might get a few months out of her before she died, but what's the fun in that?

The most amazing feeling is traveling down the interstate in a 200,000 mile+ 12 year old Q45 at speeds that would put you in jail, and looking over next to you at the guy in the Ford Cobra with the astonished look on his face, because he can't drive away from you ...Priceless

When I bought my first Q last year I wish I had known about NICO and bought a car here rather than from a private party. Mine was a good running car when purchased and I still spent about $5000 getting her running perfect. What I should have done was to take my time and read NICO posts for a couple of weeks and then bought a nice Q from the NICO classifieds. It may have cost a few $$ more but in most cases the maintenance will be current so you are really getting a good deal.

You are doing the right thing by reading up on the Q here at NICO. The more you read the more you will know about the Q. Don't buy the car you put the deposit on and forget about the $100. You are better off spending a little more money and buying a Q through NICO with a known maintenance history. In the long run you will be hundreds if not thousands of dollars ahead.

Since I've got your attention, I happen to have a mint condition '90 for sale. Fly to Sacramento and drive it home to Florida. This car is a one of a kind and is perfect cosmetically and mechanically. Realistically, if you have patience I think you can find a great NICO Q closer to home.

Good luck with your decision. Take your time before buying.

Based on what you paid it probably does need a new engine but you would be better off just getting a car with a good engine and has the guides replaced.

Big ticket items are engine $4,000 installed, transmission $3,000 installed, and ac system $2,000 installed and diffential $2500 installed, driveshaft $1000 installed and rear subframe $1,000 installed. ABS $2500 installed.

Almost every other individual problem can be repaired for less than $1,000.

YOU MUST HAVE AN EXPERT GO OVER THE CAR AND LIST DEFECTS so you can find the best one for the least TOTAL after repaired cost.

It may mean you pay $5,000 to get a very very very good one or $3,000?
