My check engine light came on first thing this morning. Quick trip to Autozone found Knock sensor fault code. What is involved with changing it out? If not DIY, how much to replace?

Check out Wes's (elwesso)plenum thread... I don't have a link here, but a quick search should find it for you. Wes also sells the sensors at a discount to members.

I just got that code too. Whats even worse is I just got done doing a plenum job. It can be DIY'ed. You may not even have to buy all new hoses, if they are still pliable. But always a good idea.

Be aware that with the 1996 G50 being OBD II, there are 4 knock sensors. I recall (perhaps incorrectly) that only the front two will throw a code and the rear two are for trim. Mileage and location will determine a whether these should be done as well.

EDIT: What a dummy! I mean 4 O2 sensors, which this thread is not about. Sorry.

I got some good info from the search and it looks over my head and time budget without a spare car. At 155k miles should I go ahead and change all the hoses and sensors or just try to replace the sensors?

You definitely want to replace the hoses, or at least have the hoses on hand.. i didnt use a lot of them, but Im glad I had them.....

Only 2 knock sensors on the G50 Q (90-96), a la FSM (for the 96)....

As heath said, i sell the sensors at a good price... my writeup at http://infiniti.home.insightbb.com should help a lot.. Parts lists, and Ill be adding diagrams one of these days!!!

Under and partially under plenum Hoses, o-rings, gaskets, valve cover gaskets, front and rear seals and knock sensors = the real never mentioned EVERY 100k engine tune up............the $1500-$2000 dollar one they don't tell you about.

I'm on my 3rd set of plenum hoses [at 262k] [80k and 200k].....from the looks of things I'll get to do it again before 300k.

Already had a replaced knock sensor [at 103k] go bad after 130,000 miles [at 233k].

If you pay $500 [labor] for a plenum job be sure to change $1,100 [$ 845 at deal prices] in under plenum parts..........the rubber or harness things you don't change will be the ones which cause you to do it again and again.

Been there done that. I pulled my plenum three times. First to do the job, second to fix a fuel leak (wrong type of hose) and third to change the knock sensors. Lesson learned, DO IT ALL AT ONCE!!!
