My 93 has a bad idle, local nissan dealer said it was a bad knock sensor and harness. They unplugged the harness and plugged it back and couldn't duplicate the rough idle. The computer came up with an error code on the knock sensor. They said to replace the knock sensor $250 part and the harness $23.00 and $525 labor. Anyone deal with this? Any suggestions? Thanks

I had the same problem with my 91 240, and had to replace the sensor but I only paid about $400 total to replace and adjust the part. So you probably do need to replace it but I would recomend a certified mechanic other than the dealer which will save you alot of money

I hope the dealer didnt unplug the harness, causing the fault code, then checked the computer and found the fault.....

It's not hard to trip them, and the code gets stored in the ECU even if the original cause goes away. The rough idle might have caused the code. Reset the code, and see if it comes back.

My knock sensor is tripping also, I checked the ecu code and it is definitely throwing the knock sensor code. the previous owner has been to the dealership countless times, he says, to remedy the problem. so far I'm not experiencing any performance issues, but I'd like to get it replaced. Can I go by the faq and replace it myself, or should I have it done professionally? should I worry about it? I'm kinda in the same boat as nismo, but it's not giving me trouble yet.

I don't see why the harness would need replacement. Chances are either the harness is bad or the sensor is bad. Unless there is something very particular about the knock sensor harness that makes it a non-reusable part. I'd do a visual inspection and check resistance from one end to the other for each terminal. I believe the knock sensor itself is just threaded into the block. I'd say try doing this yourself. You would save the cost of labor.

hey nismo, this is the link that I was talking about, I went to ctc today and the guy I talked to said this is pretty good, no reason to take off the intake manifold or anything. I priced the knock sensor at 190 and 264, the 264 sounds more like it, by Wells or something. I don't know the torque specs though, no one seems to know...

Thanks for all the input. i saw all the input from everyone. i have a mechanic who can probably do it but i was wondering of there is a way to by pass the senor altogether. isn't this just another emissions control? I removed my EGR to gain some minimal HP with no problems. By the way i did experience some rough idle which seems to go away after the A/C is turned on. Thoughts about by passing it??
