I pulled my codes out of the ECM and got the dreaded 34 code (knock sensor). I've read Wes's in depth log of his under plenum sensor removal job (Great info by the way) and Farfetched removal technique without removing the plenum. I would like to replace all the hoses underneath so I'm going to do the whole thing. I'm looking for a parts list of everything I will need to order so I have the parts I need on hand. So far, here is what I came up with from reading Wes log:

2 knock sensorsknock sensor harnessPCV valve

I seem to remember reading a post that Joe had a kit of hoses for sale that had everything you need for an underplenum job. Is there such a beast?

How about the plenum gaskets, throttle body gaskets, IAC gasket, EGR gasket? Do any of these require replacement or are they usually re-usable?

I'm not looking forward to this job but I am looking forward to the car accelerating and running like it should. We have 3 cars so it's no big deal if it takes a few days, I just don't want to be sitting around with everything torn apart while I wait for a part to come in that I forgot to order.

Thanks in advance...

farfetched method applies to the FY33, not G50. you will have to pull the plenum. also checkout Meaux recent thread on ks replace.if you want the econo route hit up poormanQ. your call. if you want the oem route, then you want:1. plenum to hose kit. this is all the pcv type stuff.2. my suggested) the brake booster hoses. you WILL likely break the plenum to check valve hose when you pull it apart.3. (also suggested) heater hoses. there is no better time to do this. $83.12 for the two.4. underplenum water hoses. IoS will not automatically give you this one, you have to ask. there s one additional water hose as i found out mid-job that lies wholly on the throttle body. if you want them all, ask.5. secondary air hoses. one of these is the 'infamous' y hose that feeds the aac/iacv.6. aac gasket, tb gasket, egr valve gasket. maybe the snorkel gasket if you have tcs. you want to get it all and avoid down time in the middle of the job.

ohm your injectors and see if you have any questionable ones. again..no time like the presnet.

do all your fuel hoses [bulk 5/16 hi press hose].

recommend changing thermostat while you are in the area.

might want to do all your vacuum lines, too. you can get 5 meters of geniune nissan vac hose for $33.34 p/n B2318-N3301.

i also took advantage of having things clear to change plugs. valve cover gaskets if they are leaking and the plugs are cake.

i just did this recently so it's fresh in my mind if i can offer any insights.

Joe's kit is not complete, only the minimum. Check some previous posts on the topic for a more complete list.

Thanks guys. I ordered the parts Monday so the parts would be here this week since I pulled the intake plenum on Sunday. Now I have to evacuate our house because of Hurricane Rita and the fact that we live on Padre Island. The car isn't running because the parts aren't here and now it's a little late for me to try to put it back together. It's got full coverage so that's the only good thing I can say about this whole thing. Can Q45's swim?

The hurricane wound up missing us so as soon as UPS starts running again and delivers my parts, I should have the car on the road.

I just replaced the knock sensors and the harness. What a complicated engine design. I can't believe all the hoses, the plenum design and basically what a pain in the butt it is to work on that motor when it comes to any type of under plenum work. You really have to take your time and pay attention to what your doing and how your doing it. I found myself laying across the wiring harness for fuel injectors, yanking on the plenum while it was hung up on one of the myriad of hoses and getting frustrated when it came to removing the plenum. When installing it, if I started to get wound up, I would take a break and do something else for a few minutes. Wes's write up on knock sensor removal was a great help. I found one of the knock sensors was cracked in half. I am going to finish putting the little pieces on later this week and see how it runs. I pray I didn't leave a hose disconnected because I would hate to have to dig back in there to do it. I can't see how Farfetched was able to replace the knock sensors without removing the plenum, amazing. You really don't need a lot of tools to do this job, but you need patience. It's just nuts and bolts and being meticulous when it comes to re-assembly. It would have helped if it wasn't 106 degrees (117 degrees heat index) outside but I got the majority of it done.

the 97-01 Q was COMPLETELY different... Its impossible to replace the KS with the plenum on, HELL you cant even see them with the plenum on unless you really know what your looking for...

I have a specfic wrench (actually a pair of channel locks, those are a no-no for underplenum work) that I woudl throw against the wall or ground whenever i cut my hand or got mad... The best thing to do is when you start getting pissed, go clean the plenum...

When you really break it down though, at least to me, it makes sense...!

Congratulations, Coasty! I wish I were not such a heat wuss!

Being younger (or at least a younger body) would be OK too!

Thanks, I guess 40 isn't too old yet.

I suppose the engine layout makes sense from an engineering stand point but when it comes to working on it I don't see the method to their madness. In my Dodge diesel truck, it's an inline 6 cylinder, puts out 325 hp and is so damn easy to work on compared to the Q, so when I think of an easy to work on engine that is what I think of...

Now that you've done everything, do you have the complete list of factory parts?

I didn't finish putting it all together as I started to fade from the heat and I still had to give my daughter a bath. I'll let ya know how it turns out but I have read others saying that it made a noticeable difference.

The parts list I used was the one that Wes was referring to. If your gonna tackle this job, I would read and follow that outline.

The one thing that really hacked me off was the hose in front of the IAC hose that goes to the plenum. I tried to find a hose puller, but setteled on a LARGE set of 90deg. Needle nose pliers. Going back together was alot eaiser than gettin it apart...

I didn't drop any blood till I changed the oil filter...:-)

I lived in Houston for 21yrs., and just couldn't take the heat any longer, I know what you mean...:-)

It ain't the heat so much as the humidity. I remember it being 100° F and raining. Watched I610 pavement in front of me cracking.

I'm not here by choice, I'm in the Coast Guard and this is where I'm stationed. I've never sweat so much in my life but I've gotten use to it. I race motocross and when I have all my riding gear on and it's over 100 degrees, that is when I feel like a total dumba$$.

I took the car out last night for a test drive and it drove great, even after I let everything heat soak. I'm finding it hard to believe I didn't miss a hose somewhere but apparently I didn't. I was looking at the knock sensors last night and it turns out both of them were cracked, so I'm pretty sure that's the cause. I bought a brand new MAF as well as a used one for no reason, but atleast the car is fixed now.

Congrats, and ill tell you one thing, the hardest thing I think in the plenum is mustering the courage to start the car after you complete it..

Yup, that was nerve wracking. I spilled a little antifreeze on one of the belts when I was filling the radiator back up before I started the car and when the car first started it squealed like crazy. I was sittin' there wondering to myself, "What the heck could I have done to cause this poor car to squeal like that?". It went away after a few seconds luckily. If something is wrong when you go to start you have already imagined having to tear that damn thing down again and I don't know mentally if I would be able to do it for a few days...

well done. i've drained the block now twice [water pump, then plenum], and about 2 minutes after first restart it starts smoking like crazy and i momentarily freakout. just coolant burning off the exhaust.

i think joe will take back your unused maf. if not let me know and perhaps we can agree on a price.

oh, and you aren't aviatorone on e-bay by any chance?if so, i have something i think you might want.

Unfortunately, they won't take back the MAF. I'm willing to sell the used one I bought for what I paid for it, $100 and it works fine.

I used a syringe and sucked all the antifreeze out of the plenum area before I re-assembled everything so I would be able to tell whether or not I had a leak when I started it.

That's not me on Ebay, sorry bout that.

Yes, starting the car up after this job was kinda funny. My confident wife rushed the 2 kids outside and said, "Now Daddys gonna start this thing up, so stand back here because it might explode"!

Couple of cranks and she starts right up...no excitement for the crowd...:-)

I did end up with one 10mm bolt, and a metal and plastic cable bracket, but I don't remember where it went...

I always end up with pieces, not because i dont know where they go but because im trying to engage in weight savings! The key is to take all the bolts out one at a time and as soon as it falls apart, put one more back in.

ok, glad we weren't competing.... just a reminder to all [not you singled out] to post your e-bay ID.

on the MAF, mine works good enough that I'm not so interested in another used one--- I was just hoping for a deal on the new one -- kinda like i'm not real sure it will make a difference, so i don't want to plunk down $350+ on a new one for an infinetesimal change.

I don't blame you. I think the car ran better on the used one than it does on the new one. It seems that there is a little hesitation right off idle with the new one that I didn't have with the used one. I'm gonna hang on to the new one because as soon as I sell the new one to you, mine will die. Happy hunting...
