does anyone know if the sensor goes bad after it detects a knock?? i have the hesitation @ 2k rpm's and have "code 34" with the ECM.

can i clear out the codes to get the car out of "safe mode"? so to speak.how long do i have to leave the battery cable disconnected for? and which do i disconnect- the pos or neg?

thanks to all that reply!! Brian i've been trying to im q45tech- he's a walking infinity manual!! but, i don't have the "permission" to im him. if anyone could ask him to take a look @ this he'd know!!! thanks

A bad sensor is a bad sensor. The code is a symptom, not a cause. Replace the faulty sensors.

Why would you want to clear the codes? They will come right back if the sensors are bad. Replacement requires plenum removal by the way. So think about doing all the other stuff under the plenum, hoses etc and valve cover gaskets too as the plenum removal is a major deal. Believe me you won't want to do it twice. Good news is you probably won't hurt the car if you have to delay a little to get funds together, you will just have the stumble. The knock sensors will no longer be protecting from detonation, just make sure you are using good premium gas, and baby it a little. You should be OK for emissions too. I was in Maryland while pulling the code.

Actually, if the knock sensors fail the ECU is protecting the engine all the time by retarding the timing. So, bad mileage and performance.

I drove on bad KS for a year or so....

In response to 911/Q45, they dont really affect mileage that much, but the car is such a dog (especially the 94s!)

You cannot bypass the knock sensor, as if they are bad they will be detected bad, and the car will be in fail safe even before the car starts!! Theres no way around it buddy, sorry

YOu may be able to clear the code, but it will just come back...

The KS dont fail because of detonation. They fail because their plastic cover cracks (I have pictures) and just from old age.. They are a "sensor', they just hear things, and the computer adjusts the timing....
