Ka24de I have recently received a loud engine knock in my 1990 240. I don't know if this a common thing with the 240, but before I go ripping into the motor I would like a little guidance. If you have run into this please help. I want to swap for the mighty SR I have a cash prob.

The question is. Is the ka series motor known for engine knocks if so is it normally in the bottom end or top.

Engine knock is pretty much always something w/ the bottom end - that's just a general rule w/ engines in general I believe...

As for ka series being "known" for engine knock, not any more than any other engine. If the previous owners maintained it well, it stays good, if not o well. We've had people have engines blow up pre 100k & ones who are still running the oem block past 200k.

I figured it would be bottom end I just did not know if this has been something known in the ka series. I have 140k on the clock and I guess I have to bite the bullet and go through the ton of swap info. on here and figure out what I need to do. Thanks for the help wish it had been better news.

well just make sure its the engine knock not something else like in the suspension/steering area which are known to make noise(s)

I don't think it's in the sterring or suspension because you can hear the knock when the car is sitting still at idle. When the motor is idling you can hear it a little. When the rpms reach about 1500 it sounds like someone is in the engine with a hammer building a house. I guess its time to go ahead pull the engine.

If you can hear it at idle are you sure it's not timing chain noise?

No, I'm not sure. Would the timing chain sound that loud to be mistaken for a bottom end knock? Is the timing chain known for being loud when it is time to change? Also, what is the suggested mileage to change the timing chain? I'm picking up a Chilton's manual today for the 240. Will this be enough guidance to change it? Sorry, that paragraph has alot of questions. Tomorrow is the only day I have the time to do this. Is this a weekend warrior type of job?

ok so u have a 1990 240 right? which if its the origanial engine its a ka24e and they are well known for timing chain issues and they will make a hell of a racket when they are bad. im not sure this is your problem but if it is you can totaly do it in a day easy even if its your first it should take anymore that 2 days at the most and for that chilton manuel is not worth a f**k, dont waste your money just look up the tutorial on this site it accually gives you a faster more discriptive procedure. if it is your timing chain u should replace both guides, sprokets, tensioner and chain all at the same time. it should cause less that 2 hundred bones

Thanks for the info. I guess I won't buy the Chilton manual. If it only cost $200 I guess I'm doing it tomorrow. Yes it is a SOHC not the Dual. So yes being a newbie I called it a ka24de instead of ka24e. My apoligies I'm sure I'll catch h3ll for this. Either way it will be a SR in the end.

New to 240 not cars. I used to work in an independent shop until the owner was killed. Now I sell cars. I was just checking to see if they were known for knocks. Even if it turns out to be a disaster in goes the SR. Either way win win.
