My check engine light came on during a recent roadtrip. I had just gone through some spirited turns, mostly at high revs. I checked the ECU diagnostic code a few days later and saw that it indicated at '34' or knock sensor warning.

Is this something I should be concerned with? I have reset the ECU malfunction code and so far it has not come back on. What exactly does a knock sensor sense? Is it an irregularity in the pressure or temperature cycle in the cylinder/crankcase? Do I need to look into this further, or can I just forget about the problem?

Thanks!

"Is this something I should be concerned with?"

Yes.

"what exactly does a knock sensor sense?"

Engine knocking conditions.

You should look further into this. You should get the knock sensor and circuit checked out.

I got this all from the service manual, but unfortunately I don't understand how to check the circuit and don't know how to check the sensor as well.

Good luck.

Thanks! I just got my PDF service manual in the mail. It's unfortunately vague on some issues, but hopefully this is a resolvable or ignorable issue.

the light means that there's something screwy in the knock sensor circuit, not that your engine knocked (at least as far as I know). I'm running 91 octane with base timing and I get that code occasionally.

Did you ever replace the knock sensor, or just run with it and reset the ecu each time the light came on.

Ken,

I'm not sure if your question was directed to me or InsanityInc, but I just reset my ECU and haven't seen the error code return.

No code, no problem?

There's another good thread here on the knock sensor problem, but I haven't gone to that extent. As long as the computer is not detecting anything funny and the engine seems to be running well, I'm going to stick with the assumption that the original malfunction was just an abberation.
