Hey guys,
I have a 90 NA 2+2 with ~101,000 on it. I've had it for about 5 months. Soon after I got it, I noticed a "knocking" sound coming from the trransmission, especially after I'd been driving it a little harder. I only hear it when its in neutral, and the clutch is engaged. When I push in the clutch, it goes away. Also, when its in neutral, and I put a little bit of force on the shifter towards one of the gears, the sound goes away. Its hard to tell whether its there when I'm moving with the car in gear as the engine rev and road noise drowns it out. It was on a lift a couple of weeks ago to get an exhaust estimate, and I was able to confirm that the sound is coming from the transmission and not from inside the bellhousing. It does speed up with motor revving as well.
It shifts pretty darn smoothly into all the gears. I get a little grind if I'm really getting on it and trying to hustle through the gears, but is fine when shifting normally.
Has anyone seen/heard this before? Any ideas what it may be? Should I be looking at getting another transmission on hand due to an impending failure?
Thanks for your help!!
Scott
