Hey everyone i was reading theMarch 2003 "Turbo" magazine and in it mentioned balance shaft removal for a QR25DE. Well anyway it says "... knife edged cranks are carved like a wing to better cut through the oil...less resistance means more power..."Does anyone know if it is a Balance shaft removal kit or a knife edge crank kit?? Also I assume it will work the same for the SR20DET, so anyone know where i can get one for the sr20? THANX!

thers's a lot of debate on knife edging a crank, i'm pretty sure i'm going to knife edge mine, but be sure to get it balanced, the balance shafts just reduce vibration of the motor, takign them out removes some parasitic loss on the motor

hey i'm coming from dsm world, I have not ripped the block of my sr apart yet, regardsless if you knife egde your crank you will have to balance it, which is whta i said, the balance shafts in a 4g63 keep engine vibration down, so taking them out will cause more vibration. they are more of a comfort thing

i think you are confused, knife edging a crank and removing the balance shafts are two completly diffrent things

I am by no means an expert on this, but if your crank is hitting the oil in the pan that is a very bad thing. It will aerate the oil and then the oil will not be able to protect the motor. Now knife endging will give you less weight to have to swing around and possibly even less air resistance.

Balance shafts are primarily used on transverse mounted cars(as they tend to be the ones with the problem) to eliminate engine vibration. For some reason customers don't like it when the cab vibrates a lot. I don't know of any valid reason not to remove them if you are o.k. with the vibrations you will feel. The parasitic loss is pretty minimal, but what do you expect from a relatively "free" mod.

knife-edging a crankshaft is supposed to cut down on windage. windage is simply the drag on the spinning crankshaft assembly caused by the the whirlwind of oil droplets suspended in the crankcase (it's like riding a bike in the rain).

the biggest benefit to knife-edging is a lighter rotating assembly.

you do not need a 'kit' to remove your ballance shafts. Me and Torry did it and the only thing we needed was a .15 plug and some permetex. The whole 'how to' is posted on NICO's main page.

But the SR dosn't have them so it really dosn't matter.
