Scenario:
Facebook.....
My wifes cousin is a 15 (nearly 16) year old male. (I consider him very close family to me)
He isn't the smartest guy around (dyslexia is probably a contributing factor)
Gets picked on constantly (cyber bullying?)

I get a bit fired up, and post a comment defending the guy after a usual nit-pick fest.

Now I have spent the last 40 mins shutting these fools down.
(They picked on him for spelling, yet their own spelling, grammar, and diction is typical teenage uselessness)

Am I a bad person for entering into a battle of wits with (young) unarmed men?

I seriously believe they might be better people if their parents smacked their heads when they were being little s***, like we were.

Also, private schools appear to churn out idiots... paying the extra for tuition doesn't appear to help!

funny story..........when i was in the 8th grade, my friend, also in the same grade, replied to a foolish statement another one of our friend's sister had made. He said under his breath "The future is bleak." Our friend's sister is only 2 years younger than us. Ever since then, i've seen proof of his comment countless number of times. As time goes by, it seems the majority of children become more computer literate at younger ages at the cost of common sense.

You are not wrong for standing up for your family, but you should also help him to learn to stand up for himself. you can't always be there. i've been slightly cyber bullied before. the simple solution is to delete or block the idiots.

Oh, he's been standing up for himself for a long time ( a LONG time)

I can see it's really starting to wear him down now though.....
Maybe it's the troubled teens, or maybe it's just been going on for too long, or maybe it's starting to get worse....

At least he is an awesome athlete.
Damn good at rowing... only been playing rugby for a year, but nearly made the state team.

I guess something snapped in me today, and I wanted him to know I have his back.

oh i thought he was just sitting by as you handled his problem. you wouldn't be human if you didn't want to see the bullying of a family member stopped. and you should tell him that in today's world, most teens have no right to criticize anyone's spelling and/or grammar.

No, I think you're a good man to help defend him. But depending on how he knows those brats, I question whether your fighting on line battles for him might create different problems for him elsewhere. For example, the brats could shift their bullying to areas where you cannot intervene as easily on his behalf.
My recommendation would be to focus your help in ways where you are not so visibly involved. For example, if he gets teased online, perhaps you could help the young man draft clever responses but sent under his name. If he does a good job defending himself on line, the bullies should tire quickly and move on.

It's a whole different world out there now than it was when we were his age. We never had to worry about this crap. The biggest problem with cyber-bullying is that more and more little pricks think they are ten foot tall and bulletproof, when they are shouting from behind the big bad shield of an internet connection and a computer screen. The majority wouldn't be as apt to run their mouths in person. In the grand scheme of things, grammar, spelling and punctuation are of little importance on social networks, especially if he isn't networking. I would personally advise him to delete all comments from them, block them from being able to see his comments or post, and take the higher road and leave it alone. The easiest way to put out a fire is to stop pouring gasoline on it.

It was nice of you to help him out and give him some backup but he does have to learn to stand up for himself. I agree with Joel. You might be a better resource behind the scenes than on the front lines. I wish him good luck.

Want help? :bigthumb:

One of the universal truths is there's always a bigger c*** out there; be that c***.
