What's the deal with these micro chipped keys and going about programming it?

..............................

Hey guys... I recently purchased a 2004 G35x back in February and unfortunately, I wasn't given an extra spare key to it.

I called Infiniti dealer in Fife, WA and its around $300 to have it programmed and for the purchase of an extra key. I was casually looking on eBay for random things, and I guess we have eBayers whom are selling these, as well as the keyless entry remotes....

Has anybody tried this.. and if so, has it worked? or what are your thoughts? do you recommend/how easy or hard to do, etc.?

...............................

** I've searched the forums a little bit, but nothing that explained much **

thanks men!

Welcome to NICO

Unfortunately the time to have addressed the single key issue was prior to purchasing the vehicle.

New vehicles come with two remote keys and a valet key.

They are difficult and expensive as it is also a theft deterent.

I would be careful purchasing anything off ebay.

If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

Perhaps you could get quotes from other dealers and you might just have to suck up the $300 and learn from not addressing this at the time of purchase.

Just my $.02

My girlfriend is in the same boat. I went to Lowe's and had two keys made and came out to realize they didn't work. I obviously didn't do enough research on the car.... When I called the local dealer he told me it was $279 plus tax for a spare key.... OUCH! I'm convinced some of the non-Infiniti dealers keep the extra key to sell it but that is just my conspiracy theory..

Anyway - I was headed to the local locksmith/key shop yesterday (in her 2004 G35 Coupe) to get a spare key for my new motorcycle and I thought why not ask them if they could make one??? They have tons of lock related stuff. The guy told me that they can and do make spares for Infinitis. He told me it would be $80 worst case and $60 best case. Hell of a lot better than $279.... Anyway - they tried to make me one yesterday but couldn't because they could find the PIN required to duplicate the key. They told me to come back during the week when they can call someone who can get the PIN with the VIN number. I'm excited about saving a couple hundred.... Pretty damn sad when you are HAPPY to pay $80 for a spare key....

Check with your local key shop....

BTW - the local car lot we bought the Coupe from told me to call Nissan as they could make one a lot cheaper. I called them and they said they could NOT make Infiniti spares....

i need to hook up with you and see if he'll do mine as well. I live in corpus and wouldn't mind getting the key shipped to me. Keep us posted. I'm digging this idea. but i want to try one of these.

I have purchased the fob and both types of keys (normal and switchblade) off Ebay and they both work fine. The non switchblade key looks like an exact match to the OEM.

The fobs are easy to program but the keys have be programmed with a code or your engine wont start when you try to use it (starter turns but engine never starts). Local Nissan dealership does this for 40 bucks and they cut the key for free. Took them about 10 minutes.

I would definately recommend getting them off EBay and contacting local dealers to program.

If one of the keys that you currently have is programmed as a master key (not valet), then most cars have a way you can program another key through a series of steps.

If you don't have a key programmed as a master, many times you cannot add another key.

Depends on the car and year.
