I have read a few reports that the Keyless Entry and Ignition ("Smart Key") can be problematic on the Versa and had an "Uh Oh" moment with mine. A quick call to the dealer, however, provided a quick solution.

The problem manifested itself by the ignition switch refusing to turn even though the green "Key" light - showing that the keyless system had recognized the proximity of my in-pocket fob - was lit.

Here is what my dealer told me to do: Grab the steering wheel and yank it counterclockwise and then release it. Presto the problem was resolved.

It seems that there is a built in steering lock that can put pressure on the ignition switch. This was common - and very apparent - on older cars, but had been 'invisible' up to know on the Versa.

Anyhow, I bet this is the same problem that others have had (My dealer was certainly familiar with it) and they, like myself, no doubt felt helpless and stranded when it manifested itself. Good to know the "fix" is easy.

Its pretty common if the steering wheel is locked that the ignition will not turn unless the wheel is turned, no matter the car or ignition system.

Quite so. Kind of odd that I never experienced it on the Versa before yesterday.

yea, normally with a key'ed car you wouldn't be able to turn the key in the ignition, but with the keyless setup, you would never know...

good find
