So one of my last issues on this qx4 of mine is sorting out why the keyless entry is not working.

When I bought the car it only had one key with it no fobs or spare key

I bought two fobs and tried to program them unsuccessfully. I got the car to go into program mode but it would not take either fob.
Both fobs had new batteries and tested to put out a strong rf signal.

In my town no one could do a spare key for the 01 qx4 due to the chip in them. So I went to a dealer and had a spare key made and bought the fobs with me. They got a key made but could not get the phobs to program either.

The deaIer informed me that my 2 fobs with a 4 button set up were not what the QX4 used. It has a 3 button set up stock (the 4th button is a trunk button which I assumed was for the lift gate...wrong...)

Anyways they were cool and did not pressure me to get buy a new fob from them at a crazy price but just said when I get the different ones in to bring it by and they would program the fobs for free.

I bought 2 more fobs that I made sure were right according to the guide on here. I first tried to just program them in my self I figured it would take 5 min and would save the gas to the dealer. This time I could not even get it to go into program mode though so I figured well i'll just let the dealer do as it is not going to cost me anything anyways...

So I brought them in. The dealer said they tested fine for a very strong rf signal but could still not get the vehicle to accept them. They tried both the key removal method and using CONSULT but said the vehicle would not register them. I stated that I think it may be an issue on the vehicle and not the fobs....and they seemed to agree with me. I figured that in order for CONSULT to register it in the first place that the key less entry module has to do its job. They apologized for the trouble and I left.

SO this leads me to thinking I have an issue with the Smart Entrance Control Unit (which contains the key-less entry module) with a replacement needed. I know that is controls a whole list of things which none of which seem to be malfunctioning just the key-less entry.

Any thoughts one this one? Did I miss anything?

What's the exact model number of the remote you bought? These cars are notoriously picky when it comes to remotes. I had terrific luck and ended up with 3 remotes that worked, but it sounds like I got lucky. Check out these threads:

I wonder if there's a diagnostic/testing procedure for the receiver in the FSM...

Thanks your response. I will post up images of the fobs' numbers as well as my vehicle production date later today when i get back from a meeting that I'm sitting in typing on this forum...

Maybe i am missing something easy and just need a 2nd set of eyes on it.

Ok, I think I have somewhat of a handle on how these remote models work...

First off, the post that I was trying to find earlier, that has some useful pictures and charts:

how-to-pick-a-factory-remote-t559107.html

And a page that has the Infiniti chart and all of the referenced pictures of remotes:

http://www.infinitihelp.com/diy/common/ ... /index.php

The date ranges in the Date column are a bit confusing since there's some odd date overlaps, but based on the fact that yours was manufactured in June 2000 and the Model/ 01A (2W612) remotes aren't working for you, I'm going to say you need a Model/ A (2W611) remote. The bad news is they're apparently much harder to come by than their 01A brothers.

All that being said, there's another thing you can consider giving a try. I have an 01 QX4 that was manufactured in November 2000, and according to the charts, the 01A should (and does) work fine for me. However, before I knew about this remote complexity, I went out and bought a KBRASTU15 (5W500) and it worked flawlessly. I bought another and it also works great, though it would appear they shouldn't! So, if you're up for a bit more experimenting, getting one of those may work for you too. :bigthumb: The model number on the back of both of mine is MSRA16. They're much easier to come by.

Which guide here did you buy the two remotes based on?

Assuming the smart entrance controller unit is actually working, at least one of those two will work for you. Those units control other things like the defrost timer, interior lights, warning chime, and a number of other things so I would think you would be having other problems if it was really defective. If you want to do some troubleshooting on it though, check the EL section of the FSM, page 319.

By the way, we have some crazy heavy vehicles! 5300 lbs!?! It's amazing they get around as quickly as they do.

Thanks for the imput that is interesting to know your experience. I used that chart posted in your first link to pick the ones i currently have, as well as a part number supplied by the dealer for them. The date over lap was slightly confusing so that why i had the dealer give me a part number which was for the 2w612. I figured they had my vin on file and looked up the number using that but maybe they just assumed it was made in 01. I didn't think much of it as people around here had said they worked... But guess not. I am always up for experimenting so i will gladly try one like yours. It truly didn't seem like it was the smart entrance control box because i knew it controls a whole list of functions and as i mentioned above every thing eles appears to be working great that it controls according to the fsm but after looking at the chart and confirming a couple times that i had ones that in theory should work by dealer supplied part number I couldn't think of anything eles that it might be...

I have been pretty frustrated because i have programed remotes to a lot of different vehicles and never had these type of issues before

This is a great start for me though. Who would have thought that those other ones would work great for ya. I appreciate the experience and wisdom thanks...

If any one needs one of the remotes in the picture let me know 25 bucks...

For me the qx4 feels pretty nimble i have a big dodge truck that weighs almost 7000 grand. Same with mpg haha. I hear a lot of people complain about the pathfinder and qx4 millage but for me anything better than 11 is awesome.

For 01 QX4 manufactured on or after 11/00 you need a Model 01A or the newer KBRASTU15.

01/00 thru 10/00 use Model A.

I went thru this same dilemma for my 01 Q 08/00 and finally figured out I needed Model A.
