Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there is an ignition release switch and where it might be located. I can't find an access point under the steering column... Currently, my key has become stuck in the ignition, and will not rotate to the left-most "lock" position. Therefore, I have to pop the hood and disconnect the battery as it sits in the driveway so that the battery doesn't drain out. I believe that my key is simply worn and may have a slight twist in it preventing me from extracting it. If I can find a way to release it, I'll get a new one cut asap.

Thanks in advance.

This sounds kinda basic.... Not calling you an idiot or anything, but did you try moving the steering column?

I would look at the owners manual or look though the service manual paper copy which should be some where in your vehicle or online version: http://Nicoclub.com/FSM/J30.

But there should be some kind of a release mechanism.

Good luck and welcome to NICO.

haha, Thanks Dan... No, it's not the steering wheel position. Tried all that. I finally got the key out last night though, and the key doesn't look as bad as I thought (still could use a new one). I used a rubber mallet and gave it a few love taps , and it finally came free. I believe my ignition is just getting old and one of the tumblers got seized up. This could possibly be attributed to the fact that it's been as cold as -20 F here the past week. Anyways, thanks for the suggestions guys.

Anyone see any reason not to give my ignition a little lubrication?

Time for some graphite lubricant. I have a badly worn key, for another vehicle, and it can be removed from the ignition when the engine is running.

Keep the number of keys/the weight of your key ring to a minimum to reduce wear on the ignition.

Original J30 keys are made of titanium, so they don't wear much.
