89 240sx

My key is stuck in the ignition after completing my 5spd swap. I know about the little red emergency lever, but I want a permanent fix. I am still using the auto ecu. I know about the shift lock control unit but I don't know a procedure for making it work again.

Any help would be appreciated.

You might just need the manual ecu so it can tell the relay to release the the lock on the ignition for the push boutton.

nissan automatics require an extra box that defeats the auto keylock safety feature.

So do I have to use the 5spd ecu all the time? Or does just using it one time reset the mechanism?

it's been so long since I had an automatic it's hard to remember. The lever, is it an electrical switch? If so just jump it.

i don't think so, it is right behind the button to remove the key under the little trim piece.

there is a cable that goes from you auto control unit to the ignition when you remove it the cable is still there so to get it out all you have to do is grab the cable and pull it somewhat out of the sleeve thus making the ignition think its in park so you can remove the key, whenever if it think its in drive D, N, or R then you wont be able to remove the key i had this problem one time and figured it out. if thats not it just say so i might have some more ideas...

Well, i know it has been awhile so i'll give an update...

I couldn't figure what to do but finally got it to work.

Here is what I did...

Took off the steering column trim peices.Broke the top half of the white plastic peice on the ignition(I suppose you could unscrew it but mine was already broken a bit) (and i was mad) Took out the Dremel with the cutting disk.Sawed off the part that was getting in the way.

looks like this... from top.

spring-------------|| <---this part gets in the way of the button ^ || | | cut here

Put it back together.

works just like normal.

crap, the little drawing didn't work.

refering to the picture...

basically just cut it somewhere along the horizontal part, far enough back so that when it flips up, it won't get in the way of the part the button attaches to.

Just for clarification...

The S13 uses an electronic key lock for the autos, and the S14 is a cable lock.

Either way, best bet is to cut/break them off, like ^^^ did.

that was what i was having a problem with...

I had gotten the auto control unit out and there was no cable.

I thought WTF and was miffed because i had my glove box all over the garage, then started in on the steering column.

I think what Gnarkiller was trying to tell you was the shift cable that goes on the bottom of the original auto shift lever has to be pulled back so that it is in the park position or the ignition thinks its in gear and will not let the key release.

Hmmm, so how would I disable this key thing on an auto 89 240sx? Anyone know the wire I'm suppose to cut or jump? - My problem is a slightly different one -> turboing automatic, have turbo timer -> can't get key out while turbo timer is counting down unless I press the brake which turns off the engine.

Thanks .
