Suddenly, my key fobs (2, original to the car) only start the car when inserted. If I leave the key in my purse, nothing. Also, the car will not unlock with the key in my purse. I must push the unlock button on the fob. Both fobs have this problem.
I bought new batteries even though that seemed an unlikely cause. Still not woorking.
Obiviously there is some loss of communication between the fob and the car. What can I do about it?

Might be programming. When my car was still under warranty, I had the same thing happened. Dealer gave me two new fobs and reprogrammed. This was on my 2011.

Yeah! I'd check with the dealer. If the fobs are the original ones, then I'd make sure to ask them to reprogram at no cost.

Seems to me to be a malfunction of the intelligent key unit (285E1-EH10C), being now unable to recognize signals from the remote unit (remote keyless entry receiver:28595-EH100).

The systems on the Y50 and the Y51 (yours) are actually different. In the Y50 the remote unit works through the intelligent key unit, for the Y51 it's linked to the BCM.

Forgive my lack of knowledge for your vehicle, but do these keys not have a battery?

Yes, They operate by small circular batteries similar to a camera. I replace both of mine on my birthday each year to make sure they don't go titz-up. You can buy them at most pharmacies / grocery stores.

Yep, that's to be expected with different generations. But the overall symptom is very similar so the point of my post was replace the fobs and get the new ones programmed and then see what happens. In my case I couldn't connect to the BCM unless my key fob was 1" away from the start button. In the OPs case, they need to insert the key fob into the slot which IMO is a similar behavior/task...just sending the signal to a different unit. I'd start with the fobs and work from there.
