The SOB's who sold me my QX4 only gave me one key and no remoteless entry fob. I took the key to Home Despot and they told me that they couldn't copy the key because it had a chip in it. (Appears to have one anyway).

Where can I get a key copied

and...

Where can I get the fob?

All w/o taking it up the arse.

Hey welcome to the world of the 99 QX4!!

eBay is your best bet. I've found fobs and keys on there, all OEM, before. To program, you have to go to the stealership, but if you can, avoid buying anything from them, in my opinion.

Like this guy says - eBay has the keys uncut for about $35 shipped (versus the dealership which sells the uncut key for $95)

Make sure you get the correct key, an OEM for a 97-01 QX4 with built in transponder (that is the name of the chip). The dealership will cut and program your key for around $100-$120. So if you go the whole 9 yards at the dealership, expect to pay $200+ eBay key brought into the dealership, $140 total cost.

That's about the price I wound up with as well -- I haven't done this, but I need another key.

back in the day, I worked at Radio Shack and a guy who owned an f-body Camaro came in and wanted to bypass the chip on his key. Turns out, that chip is just a resistor, so we measured resistance and found the correct sequence of resistors and he was able to wire them inline to make it work.

With that said, how do our keys work? Is there a way to bypass this? I'd love to have some crappy old key I could hang onto as a spare somewhere.

When I bought my 02 the guy only had 1 key and fob. I bought 2 sets off ebay for i think $80 total and I found a local locksmith that was able to cut and program all 3 keys I had for $40 and I found how to program the fobs offline.

1. Get in the car.2. Lock the doors with the door switch.3. Use your key and put it in and out of the ignition ( with out turning it, just in and out) 6 times. At least it was 6 times for my Pathfinder.4. The turn signals should then blink twice. 5. Insert your key and turn to the farthest position with out starting the vehicle, I think its ACC or something. 6. Press the lock button on the keyfob. 7. Take key out. 8. Unlock doors.9. Test keyfob.

If I remember right you have to do it 6 times in 6 seconds pretty much exactly, otherwise it didnt work.

When you say "keyfob" do you mean the Infiniti key with built in transponder?

No. The keyless entry device.

Sorry - I should have clarified - I need to program the key, not the keyless entry.

SWEET! You guyz rule. Now I just have to bend over a little and pay for the keys and fob and key cutting/programming. Anyone have a copy of an invoice after getting nailed at the dealership? I want something to show my wife so she doesn't lose her key when I get her one.

Oh yeah, and Koukis14, how did you get your QX to do that with the fog lights? Mine only come on if the low beams are on too (if I remember correctly...)

Wanted to do this on my 240sx for years. . hahaIt's pretty easy. . Fueler showed me the way

You'll need the Radioshack relay, tiny piece of wire, and soldering gunJust remember: It's easy to leave them on. I drained my battery once with this, but that's all it took for me You could wire the switch power to something else, too -- maybe a cigarette lighter so it's only powered with the ACC is on. .

I have mine hooked up to the "AC relay" which is only hot while the ignition is on, so the fogs turn off with the engine. It was not hard at all, that relay is next to the fog light relay.

You have to bring it either to the dealer (which I doubt you want to) or a locksmith that can do program them. I had to look through the yellow pages for a bit but then I found one that did 3 keys and cut 2 for $40 vs the $100+ the dealer wanted.

I would take the keys to a local hardware place, like Ace, home depot, ect just one where they will cut the keys. Then take those keys to the dealership all cut, and ask them to program the keys. I know this costed me 60 at the dealership when i did this with my ford, but same process, and the guy at the hardware store charged me like 5 bucks. Oh and buy the keys online, save money!

There was a radio spot yesterday that I heard for a local locksmith, who said they can do all the programming of various "late model" keys. If they can do it out here in BFE, Indiana then I'm sure they can do it anywhere.
