Since arriving in town I've used the Mazda MPV, with 51k, as a guinea pig for finding good shops. So far, the two nearby Firestone service centers have proven themselves affordable ($78/hr) and honest for brakes and other wear and regular maintenance items.

They want just under $100 for a machine transmission flush, which is supposed to replace 90-95% of the fluid. However, the technician said they cant use Mobil 1 ATF (which is what has been in this Q for at least five or six years) because it would contaminate their machine. Is this true?

They use Kendal (sic) transmission fluid. Any opinions on its longetivity and quality?

Thanks,-Jesda

The BG machines have a dual rubber bladder.........probably 5% does not get flushed out when you use air to purge the bladders to get ready for the next process.

If anything I would think the cross contamination is a good thing for the Kendal. Shows they don't understand the chemistry of the products.

A flush when needed [the color has changed] is better than no flush at all.............even with Kendall branded Dex III. Just add 6 ounces of Lubeguard Black after the fill has been corrected to dip stick level.

The best thing to do is to also have them pull off the transmission oil pan and clean that, and either replace or clean the transmission filter as well. The 4EAT transmissions on MPVs are kind of iffy and need to kept clean. Also have a transmission cooler added if possible. The transmission in my parents' MPV died at about 70,000mi. It started howling like a race transmission and had to be rebuilt. Twice.
