The SL has a good audio system for a stock stereo, but I'm definitely looking for more. While I get fine mid-range, there's hardly any bass, and the highs aren't as clear as I'd like. I consider myself a bit of an audiophile, and I'm reeeeeeally missing my Kenwood KDC-X989, 1200 watt amp, and dual 12" subs from my last car.

Since I don't want to give up the steering wheel controls, I was thinking about adding an OEM interface unit like the RF 3SIXTY to my factory head unit. I'm willing to spend the money to get good sound, and also plan on replacing the stock speakers and of course adding an amp and sub (maybe two). This type of unit also has the advantage of making it look like you still have stock components, so thieves won't be as tempted to break into the car and steal it.

I looked through the archives and couldn't find if anyone had actual experience with this kind of audio setup? Anyone done anything like this?

they are nice touches, but if not plug and play, is quite a job to wire up. Would not recommend a first timer to wire it up.

Well, I was planning on having it installed anyway. The Car Toys annual tent sale is next weekend, and I know that RF will be there (along with a bunch of other manufacturers) and I was hoping to pick something up there.

So how does it sound? Is the improvement in the audio worth the cost?

I find the upgrade to be well worth it. I am running 2 8" pioneer shallow mounts in addition to the speakers in their factory locations. Amps under the seats, subs in the rear. I used line output converters to get my RCA's. it was a little technical, but it all wires up pretty straight. I used the signal coming from the rear speakers for the signal for the subs and amplified the signal for the front channel to power all the door speakers. Being able to adjust the amount of signal going to the subs using the stereo controls is kind of nice so that if I need to I can still cut off the bass totally if needed by adjusting the fade.
