my KA et project has begun today, and I finished cleaning out the exhaust side of the bay, as well as positioning the turbo. finally things are coming together.

a few questions

1. when removing the aiv valve, there are 2 vacuum? hoses that connect to a sensor on the mounting bracket, are they necessary to keep, can I plug them up or connect them, or should I keep the sensor on the car.

2. Im going to have to put a pretty big angle on the oil return hose, is this going to cause I huge problem? I know that it should be gravity induced, but there just isnt enough room under the turbo on the motor mount.

anyway, here is a picture of how it looks now.

anybody with a z31 turbo on a KAe, or de, how did you mount it, mine ended up low, I was just curious?

Ill post some pics a little later

i could, but 90% of anything in this part of the board (the only part i read anymore) could be solved with a search. Don't worry once I actually start asking valid questions again i'll start giving valid answers.

btw "pffft bottom mount" = why did you make it bottom mount, you obviously are having clearence issues with the oil return line already.

not really clearance issues but the oil return work with gravity and that line would have to first go up some then bend back down. why didnt u jsut make it a top mount?

not necessarily a top mount but why not angle the turbo flange up a little bit more? oh well... you live and you learn. did you buy the mani with the flange already welded on like that? or did you weld it?

no, the turbo had to be mounted down like that to use the stock exhaust elbow, and get it to clear the steering columb and the transmission. that was the biggest pain in the a$$. also it appears that the setup of the turbo, ie: the relation between exhaust and compressor housings, have to be the same to keep the integrated wastegate working correctly.

the line isnt going up before back down, but rather 2 90 degree fittings to move the oil line over slightly

Didnt realize you had a thread going...I'm wondering about the exhaust elbow on your Z31 turbo. I couldnt find a pic of a turbo with the elbow but i found one without. Is this what your turbo outlet looks like? Its a 7 bolt flange I believe. In the pic of your setup, is the elbow facing straight down??

the flange is a 7 bolt, but I recieved my exhaust elbow with the turbo. its the stock one out of a z31 300zx. it came with the turbo that I bought. so I wasnt concerned. the thing that Im having trouble with is finding oil line fittings, they are expensive and hard to track down.

anybody have them and willing to overnight??????

you can actually remove them completely rather than plug them. They go back to ports under the throttle body, just take them off and put some vacuum caps on.2. Not to be mean, but that looks like kind of a poor spot to mount the turbo.....good luck with the drain, i top mounted for the best clearance. You may want to reconsider if it's only tacked right now.

anybody with a z31 turbo on a KAe, or de, how did you mount it, mine ended up low, I was just curious?

Yes, on a de, and the first thing i realized was a change of the turbine housing/outlet elbow would be in order. several reasons for this included- i like steering and a/c, i would have ended up with a rigged looking install rather than a clean one, and i couldn't find a flange that would fit the outlet- it looks like a regualr 3" but it isn't....took it to every exhuast shop around tyring to find anything that would fit. Anyways, i got a new .63ar housing with internal wastegate that has a standard 3 bolt outlet - this solved all the problems i was having wiht fitment- cost me another $160, but saved my install. Oh, and you can't just change the wastegate/elbow portion because regular t3 turbines use 5 bolt housings, not 7 like it is now.

I actually took out my AC and snaked the downpipe between the steering columb and the transmission, and it fits like a dream in there. now that you tell me that Im not going to be able to find a flange, that makes me wonder. I considered swapping exhaust housings, but then decided to stay with the one that I have, because we got it to fit snuggly in there.

I found the lines, just bought them off of jgs. simple and easy
