Me and Night are planning on building a KAT and were heard about something called shot pinn or something like that. Is that better then forged rods or what?

Shot peened is the process for hardening a metal, it can be done to parts that are already forged. Most people get the crank magnafluxed(magneticly inspected) and then shot peened. But you could get the whole rotating assembly done I suppose. Although I've never heard of anyone getting a set of rods and pistons done.

connecting rods are probably shotpeened more than any other part in an engine. i've seen people have aftermarket rods shotpeened, but imo, that's some unecessary overkill. it's a process usually reserved for prepping oem rods for high performance use.

Hmm...I guess I never considered keeping the stock rods. I also agree with the overkill on the forged rods.

I have only seen people get there crank done...maybe I'm just living in my own little world...8)

Shot peening can be done on just about any metal. Shot peening just increases the surface strength of the metal by literally shooting ball-bearings at it. Since most metal failures begin at the surface of metal, increasing the surface strength can may help quite a bit. A shot peened piece will have very small dents in the metal froom the bb's. So avoid shotpeening any bearing surfaces.

Well that's pretty interesting, but can you only shot peen forged metals, that's what I got from it.

I wonder what it would feel like to shot peen someones face.

no..you can shot peen non-forged metals as well.

The place building prepping my engine for turbo also told me that shot peening stresses the face of the metal and therefore they can actually get some size out of the piece they are working with, like a thousanths of an inch thought.

It's a considerably cheap solution to someone who cannot afford forged rods. A few places here (NY) will shotpeen a rod for about 20 bucks/rod. I'm sure most other places will too. But it doesn't mean one can just start increasing the boost if you have everything else stock. It's just a safeguard with stock rods, I assume. I am probably going to get it done myself, if I feel like taking the bottom end apart when I build the KA-ET, but somehow I doubt I wanna disassemble a perfectly good 70k mile engine...Unless I feel like putting my block re-assembly skills to the test...who knows :)
