i was wondering if most of you guys have forged pistons/rods/etc.. or are just running a kit on your stock block.

i have 190k on mine so going turbo sounds like trouble waiting to happen. id love to just turbo the KA but its seems more reasonable to buy a clip(whatever it may be) and sell the old KA to get some money back.

thoughts?

haha, I got KAeT, and the turbo is only bringing out the problems with the engine. Im looking around for another cheap in good condition, until I can save up 1200 for the engine with forged pistons, or 750 or so for a fresh stock block.

but to answer your question ... Im running on stock internals 165k get an usdm s14 clip and start on that.

Im wishin that I would have gone DE to start with because now that everything I have is made for sohc, Im fuxored. there arent any low mileage KAe left.

maybe Ill just build my dream CA18. but that will probably need a rebuild too.

Im boosting 7psi daily using my stock unopenned KADE.a friend of mine is running 12-15psi using stock unopenned KADE also.

But us both have spare KAs that we're going to build so yea.I think stock KA can hold pretty good amount of boost.

Two months ago (when I finished my turbo install) up until now, the car has seen numerous drift events and an autocross event.So far, everything is still in good working order.

Try and do leakdown test and compression test and see where the current motor is at. If its bad, then you should find yourself a free/cheap KA and build that mofo. Swap it in whenever you're doing turbo install.

you have a used engine. you could rebuild it if you wanted.or you could buy another used engine. and rebuild it if you wanted. just with the second option, you have to buy the engine, then pay to rebuild it. and with the one you got, you can buy parts from napa.

Pistons = $400

Rods = $500

Machine work = $300

Rings, bearings, hardware, gaskets and such = $400

So that's a quick $1600 estimate to build a block...and that's probably on the cheap side.

A used KA can be had for ~$500 with low miles from most junk yards...

I'd rather destroy and replace a stock block 3 times over (one every 18 months is acceptable to me) and spread the cost out...

Plus, many a stock block has lasted at 12-14psi and +300rwhp for 3-4 years now...

But that's just me...

I know they are out there--but i dont know of "many". There are a quite a few that i have seen at the 260-ish whp mark, but not 300+. then again--theres a lot of folks scurred to run over 9 psi too......

12-14 is a stout amount to run on the stock internals, and the motor can take it, but its not a set in stone what a motor can take. Even a built motor will go on you if its not running right, not built right, not taken care of, or not tuned properly. Its about what goals you have in mind. 300+ is a great number to shoot for, and every now and then, you can run your car at that power level, but i dont see it veing very smart or reliable at an everyday rate. stick to about 8-9 psi on the street, and to be safe, throw a little 110 in there and boost it up to 12-14. Just dont "expect" the motor to last forever---if you want power and dont really mind the reliablity issue, then go with stock internals. If you want alot of power, reliably, and to have a little more peace of mind, then build it. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

My thoughts exactly...kill any chance of detonation and she'll hold up just fine assuming she has decent compression. If your going for huge boost, say over 20lbs, then I'd swap the pistons and rings. But thats just cause the ring lands of casst pistons will fracture after a constant beating. I can't wait to find out how far I can push mine.
