heres the deal. i have a freshly rebuilt motor. i had the bottom end assembled by the machine shop and i did the head and timing components myself. when installing the chain i made sure the crank was at TDC the the cam notch was at 12:00 then linked up the silver links on the cam and crank sproket. that was all done correctly. questions are, when installing the oil pump and drive spindle there is a small punch in the spindle that is supposed to line up with the divet on the oil pump correct? so looking down inside the dist. hole the spindle's half moon shape is facing toward the front of the car correct? like this:and the dot that is supposed to line up with the divet correct?second question: the firing order is 1-3-4-2 1 being top left correct? now at TDC on the compression stroke, the rotor is pointing at the #4 cylinder plug. like so but is marked #1. correct?

meaning that the drive spindle is aligned correctly with the punch hole and divet? and at TDC the rotor should be at bottom right?

That doesnt sound right to me. I mean...everything looks to be set up right but i dont think if no.1 piston is tdc the rotor should be pointing at no.4 (i could be wrong)

Are you sure the distrib isnt 180 degrees off? I remember i had that same exact problem cause i just did a head replacement about a month or so ago and that was one of my biggest problems. A friend came over and tinkered with the distrib and got it pointing the right way but im not really sure what he did.

(EDIT: Actually now that i think about it...The oil pump has a divit similar to like a flat head screw driver correct? The distrib is half moon shaped. Possibly when you placed the oil pump in, the shaft that connects the oil pump to the distributor was 180 degrees off?)
