Well...I found a 240 year 89 sohc car and the owner told me when he starts the car it has knock. Does it mean block has hole somewhere around the engine or inside of the engine?

I need your opinions ladies and gentlemens?

1. Getting car with sohc and pull it out replace with another sohc?2. Get the sohc car do conversion to dohc?

^+1. If it's a loud Knock, a bearing has spun. If it's a higher pitch tick, thats a common lifter problem with the SOHC.

It's a little harder than "just swap in a DOHC".

If you stay SOHC and want an N/A motor, get an 89' motor. They have flat top pistons at a 9:1CR. If you want to turbo, you can either get forged pistons with a lower CR or get the 90' stock pistons. They have a slight bowl with an 8.6:1CR. You can even have a machine shop install some piston squirters like the DOHC's have.

The plan to stick with the stock motor or swap it largely depends on plans for the motor.

Do you plan to turbo or do simple bolt-ons?

Also availibility/sourcing parts for the DOHC swap can be a hassle.(harness/ecu/gauge cluster/etc)

Now, I personally like the SOHC. It's cheap to find, buy, aftermarket parts are easily found(especially used and are cheap), and hell it's already there in the car for your particular case.

Also despite the negativity they get, they are GREAT motors.

this is a good opertunity!..first man..get it in your mind to haggle for it..(it has engine damage)..make it out like your doing him a favor!..after all..its older and parts are hard to find ..get a good deal for it and then concider your options...sohc has its limitations.. but if your planing to stay low key then..stay with it..if your going for a track can..swap..with a swap you have a kabillion options..but all will cost masive jack!..its up to you..but first..get the car

i say, if it is a spun bearing then theres no sense in fixing that sunken ship. don't get me wrong, sohc is cool and all (i loooove my 89) but it sounds like an awful lot of work for such an old motor.... unless you re-build that is

sence your keeping with the "Sohc'em Bopper" (coined by me) then there's only 2 options you have with a spun bearing.

1) Buy a new motor, and look it over. Chances are, whatever you buy will have to be rebuilt anyway.

2)Rebuild the motor thats in the car. You'll need a crank, rod and main bearings, and a rod. Thats for a basic rebuild.

So, you can get rebuild kits at any parts stores. Bad thing is your getting stock replacement. IE, specs will be factory. You can always look around in your local craigslist, ebay, and the classifieds here.

Like i said before, parts are acually easy to find. Stock and aftermarket alike. Some things you will have to custome make but thats half the fun.

My SOHC:Injen intakeOBX headerFull 2.5" exhaust w/ magnaflow dual out muffler out back (sleeperish look)MSD 6A ignition (installed by me for a plug-and-play setup.)MSD Wires (I bought the 8cyl "build your own" kit so I have 2 sets)BWD Cap and Rotor (all copper connections for better conductivity)NGK plugsAnd my favorite, my solid adjustable rocker arms from HybridKA.com

off topic a little:

How do you like the solid lifters? i heard they are a bit noisy, but if I can get away from the damn OEM ones that would be worth it.

Well, thiey're great. At first, I set the valve clearance to what the recomended and it was a bit noisy. So, instead of measuring the clearances, I just do it by feel. With the clearances tighter, the noise drastically lowered. I did some shopping before I found them. I found that at parts stores, a complete set of rockers and shaftes were around $600, and about $500-550 at the dealer. The solids were only $300, and I got new shafts from the dealer for like $150. So, IMHO, the slightly noisier solids is a small sacrifice for a superior and less expensive upgrade over factory. I just do a quick check every oil change and adjust any I feel need to be. Plus, now I can run any cam I want and not have to worry about milling the cam towers cause these will adjust for the difference.

It's cool how the guy at HybridKA "makes" them. He takes your old ones, drills a hole where the factory hydrolic lifter was, taps the hole, and uses the end of a pushrod he threaded for the lifter. Brilliant!

I am very satisfied with the rockers. Now I need to complete my "quick remove" valve cover bolts that the old school hot rodders use.
