Hello All!
After my 90 240 developed a rod knock for a few days it stopped running completely. It has the KA24E from the Hardbody I believe. It turns over slowly, really slowly and when it broke down (I was driving and it just died had to get it towed home) it smelled like gas. I knew that the fuel pump was going out. I replaced the starter a while back too. Any ideas? And yes I know a new engine is needed I am saving up the money now. But for the time being I need something to get to and from work!

Rod knock turns into 'throw a rod' quickly if you drive on it. Then sometimes you get a nice window to see the rod say "Hello" out the side of the block. Incomplete ignition due to lost compression will throw fuel out your exhaust - that could be causing the smell.

I would not count on driving it anymore. Find a replacement KA engine. Try www.car-part.com - online junkyard database sortable by zip code. Good luck!

Another possible problem could be severely leaky fuel injectors. If they leak enough fuel, the engine could be on the verge of hydro-locking and turn over very slowly. It'll also smell like fuel.

Any ideas on the leaking oil? It did not do it before the engine died on me.

Did you throw a rod?

What would some signs of that be?

Leaking a bunch of oil, car doesn't run, giant hole in the block and/or oil pan.

Usually initiated by a loud BANG, although I suppose if it wasn't bad enough, you could have just pushed something out of the way and put a load on it enough to leak a bunch of oil.

The oil pan seems to have a rather large gap between block and it and that is where is oil is coming from.

Sounds like you're going to have to pull the pan and take a look.
