1990 nissan 240sx hatch won't start after driving for 20 minutes. shut down while I went to get an estimate which took about three minutes and now it won't start. So what I've done so far...

-replaced spark plugs and rotor button.

-Battery is still good and turns over just doest start.-Less then 1/4 in the gas tank but still primes

Any ideas or suggestion? Cuz I am stumped and pissed.

im gonna say it was you fuel pressure regulator. its on the back end of your fuel rail... next time its does it pull the vaccuum line off and try to start it. If that makes it start then you know what you need

Hmm thank you I will keep that in mind next time. What would cause that to fail though? Clogging, built up back pressure, low pressure? Just curious

im not sure...maybe just old age...but definelty higher fuel psi could damage it.

The regulator has a diaphragm inside that can leak and allow fuel to enter the engine through the vacuum supply hose causing it to flood out or run very rich. If you pull the vacuum hose off while the car is running and fuel comes out of the regulator you know it is bad.

there you go/\ but keep in mind that fuel doesnt always have to leak out of the fpr for it to be deamed bad, if you had an inline gauge you could check it against a time/pressure method.

I think I will be checking it tomorrow. But when it comes to doing the gauge and time/pressure method you got me confused bro, care to explain please?

your fuel system is supposed to maintain pressure for a certain amount of time. if it doesnt you can count your fpr as a possible culprit.

Im with Martin on the regulator.A bad regulator can cause your fuel pressure to be to low or to be to high also. Im thinking you might have an ignition problem, have you checked for spark?

So I removed both lines from the pressure regulator and it has a bunch of white powder all inside of it... Which I am assuming it mean that it is garbage now?

The lines may have some residue in them . You can put a vacuum pump where the vacuum hose attaches to regulator to test the diaphragm in the regulator. You will need to check the fuel pressure also.

that residue is normal, although if you can see it then that means its prolly where you cant as well, and possibly interferiing with the diaphram sealing

your idea of plenty of fuel can differ from correct amount of fuel. As well as volume of fuel to pressure of fuel. you need to find out how much psi is going to your fuel rail.

Unfortunately I wont be able to finish this. This car is offically for sale. It sucks but id rather sale to to someone who has the time to diagnose and fix since im transferring to sea duty so little to no time to put in wrench time. So now I am in the look for a 240 that is in better condition so i can DD it... Thanks for all your help I do appreciate the effort the people from this site has put in to helping me trouble shoot my car. No worries though i'll still be around picking your brains for more knowledge!
