KA24e; what to check/replace?

I picked up a KA24e engine last week from a guy who said it sounded like the it had bent valves; I didn't have a chance to hear it run. The engine is on a stand with everything stripped from it, and I'm planning the next steps.

I read a few threads on timing chains, and I figure since I don't know the mileage it might not be a bad idea to replace it, the guides and tensioners.

Is there anything I can do with the engine on the stand & head installed to check the condition of the valves?
