I just got my engine back from the machinist and need to know where the rotor should be with #1 cyl at TDC. I believe mine is at #3 and thought it should be at #1. If it should be at #1 do I just remove the oil pump and realign the distributor to solve this. It is still on the stand without oil and now is definitely the time to fix it if it needs to be fixed. Thanks

ThanksBelieve I got it setup, is there any way of telling whether or not it is 180'd. I mean switched with the #4 or do I have to wait til I get it started and go from there. Also if you have any reccommendations on a good starting psi to set my fpr at that would be helpful. I believe the Chiltons says 37 but that is listed for the pumpanyhow thanks for the response

There is a tiny notch on the lip of the distributor that the rotor should point directly to at TDC. Make sure when you put your oil pump in, the matchmarks on the shaft and pump were aligned.

Thanks for responding I am not sure that those two marks on the shaft and pump are lined up so I guess I will be pulling the pump once again. And you are saying to line it up on the notch and not directly below the #1 plug wire position, or is that just the way to determine that it is the #1 and not the #4Thanks again.

after you stab the bistributor the rotor will be facing at around5 oclock as your looking at a clock but you should have a notch like said before and if your 180 out then when you fire up you will have backfire

I tried installing the pump and shaft with the punch mark matched up but it definitely was not pointing the rotor to the notch on the distributor at about 5 o'clock. I finally got the shaft and pump moved around though so that the rotor is pointing to that notch. So hopefully all is well and when the ecu comes in I will find out pretty quickly I imagine. Thanks for the helpjnm240 nice clean ride. I did a lot of the same things with my internals as well. pdm colt cam and nology wires, coil, and plugs though. I am stoked that more people are actually doing work on an engine that is usually just swapped. after I paint the car, (bayside blue and black) I will try to get some posts up

I did my chain and such when i built my motor, so im not 100% sure if the matchmarks on the oil pump line up once the pump is installed (as the end of the gear slides in, it possibly turns a little to line up with the gear), but it should definately start out lined up. And so long as the motor is still at TDC, and the rotor is lined up with that notch (showing you the #1 cylinder), then you should be ok.

Thanks for the compliment. I put a lot of work into my SOHC. Unfortunately, i am about to swap it. Into my recently acquired fastback. The coupe will be getting a CA18DET and eventually a Silvia facelift, while the fastback will get the built KA and 5sp swap. Dont worry, tho. I still love KA's. I just want a Silvia as well.

nice. I really like the underappreciated engines. It is so much more satisfying passing by someone and then opening up the hood. Anyway thanks for all of the info, and do you have any insight on a good psi to start off on my fpr, I was thinking 40. I also bought a coil from nology that I am having some connection quandries with. so let me know if you have any knowledge of the stock coil and I will give you some more specifics. Thanks again and good luck with the ca.
