is it possible to adjust the cam and cam gear on a SOHC KA without taking the whole timing chain cover off? if i can get the tensioner to loosen up is there enough play to rotate the cam gear? i have never done anything timing chain wise and have no clue what im doing but i believe the timing is 180 off.

this is what i was thinking but again i have no idea if it is possible.... if i get the crank pulley at TDC and loosen the tensioner i was just going to turn the cam gear till that is also TDC....... BTW is TDC on the cam gear when that black dot is straight up? kinda need to get this thing running ASAP since my 510 is my only car at the moment.

thanks in advance!

i had this same problem mine wouldnt turn over cuz it was 180 degrees off but that isnt the cam gear. the cam gear has a notch in it so it cant be turned. in order to set timing take off the valve cover make sure the two different colored links are on one dot on the cam gear and one dot on the crank gear now turn the engine with a breaker bar till the red hash mark on the crank pulley is lined up with the pointer on the timing cover and the cam gear notch is pointing up. you are now at tdc being 180 degrees off means you dist gear is flipped, take out your oil pump and take that dist drive shaft out and put it back in to where the notch that goes into the oil pump is vertical while it is fully pushed in, now set the oil pump back on to the shaft in and set the dist in with out the cap and see if it is pointing at spark plug one which is the lower right one if looking at it from driver side fender, if it is pointing up to the left its flipped 180 then just turn the dist shaft around again while it is still on tdc. then plug in your wires and set the timing.

that sounds too complicated to me... what i did was put #1 at tdc on the compression stroke and then took the valve cover off put a piece of wood between the 2 sides of the timing chain... (trust me... you dont want to go fishing for it... ) once the timing chain is held in place... remove the cam bolt and sproket... move the notch on the gear till it is a lil to the right of straight up... if you notice... the motor is tilted slightly that is the reason it does not go straight up... as for the dizzy... make sure that #1 is on the compression stoke... i almost made the mistake of thinking mine wasnt on time... but i turn the motor back over again and it was right on... thats how i did it... the red notch on the main pully is where 0 degrees is on... match that with the alignment pin... which is below the power steering pump right next to the pully... and go from there... hope this helps... update when you fond out more...
