I bet this has been covered before, but I couldn't find anything using the Search button... so I'm sorry if I'm asking something that you guys have answered a thousand times.

Did Nissan ever change to an updated Guide or Tensioner design that prevents the chains from getting loose and causing the coolant leak into the oil? I know the Q45 got updated guides, but I don't know if they did this on the KA. I have a 97 truck with an engine that runs great... no oil consumption... about 125K. I would hate to toast it over a couple of guides and a tensioner.

Any insight you guys can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Heath

don't believe so, but if u havent done a timing job within 125k then its about time, and the only way the timing chain punctures the coolant line is if the tensioner breaks

I believe there was a TSB (Technical Service Bulliten) released after the motors were developed stating to use the upgraded chain guides when servicing the timing chain setup. Nissan should sell the upgraded guides as they superceed the original ones.

Thanks for the replies. JNM, I found the TSB you mentioned. It was written in 1995 refrenceing 90-94 models. It also mentions an updated slack-side guide from 1990. I wonder if I can assume that my 97 had the updated guides from the factory? A friend of mine thinks his mom had either a 96 or 97 truck that had a chain that rubbed through something and caused the coolant to drain into the oil. Maybe part of the timing cover?

Thanks!

Heath
