I just finished installing a timing chain in a 96 ka24e and when I fired it up there is a very loud tapping. When I installed the chain it was very tight on the drivers side to make the glare marks meet. My guess is the pistons are hitting the valves. I thought the marks were lined up but because of the angle and lack of sleep I could be off. Is there any other reason that could cause this other than the crank and cam being out of time?

It your cams were off it would miss fire! If its not miss firing I would take a quick look at the chain again! Also do you mean a 96 ka24de? And if you think it is the valves hitting the pistons then take the spark plugs off to take a look at the pistons!

It is ka24e not de. The loud tap was the lifters. After running for about 10 minutes it went away and didn't happen on the next cold start. Originally it was REALLY loud. There was coolant in the oil I thought may have ended up there when I removed the timing cover but it seems to be coming out the tailpipe pretty good. I didn't think my liquid gasket job was that bad. I'll check coolant level tomorrow to see if any is missing. Is it normal to coolant burning of for a bit after a timing chain replacement?
