ok well i got a 89 single cam 240 and it leaks oil out of every gasket and seal on the motor so i bought a fresh rebuilt from this guy off of a local forum. well i got the number one piston at TDC and the cam gear marks where they should be. but when i look at the crank pully i dont see any marks when there should be. i had my dad take a look at it and he says the guy who built it didnt set the timing right. the motor is really really hard to turn over, i mean i have to use a 4ft breaker bar on the crank to get it to turn over but the starter does turn it over tho. well the guy i bought it from was supposed to come over and look at it but of course he never answered his phone or anything so im trying to get my money back, but my dad said the valves are bent and all that bull****, but i was wondering if the ka24e is an non interference motor???? cause if the valves didnt hit the pistons then im going to just take the timing cover off and just retime it. any help at all would be nice, but if your 100% that the valves arent bent and all that speak up, thanks alot. oh and i did some research found some stuff on it but every one just bull****ed about it and couldent find a decent answer

The E and DE are both interference motors. When your turning it by hand with the breaker bar, are the spark plugs installed? If so, take them out and turn it over, that way you're not fighting the compression.

Pull the valve cover and turn the cam slowly by hand, well with a wrench you know what I mean. If a valve hits a piston you'll feel it, if not just turn it a few times and see if the valves actuate like there supposed to. Then retime it and do a compression test. If you have a bent valve, you'll have low to no compression in whatever cylinder has the bent rod.

well it doesnt matter if i have the spark plugs in or not, its still hard as **** to turn. whenever i have it on TDC the cam gear reads right but you dont even see the marks on the crank pully yet. im about to just order a new gasket set for my old motor and put that back it cause i know it runs good but needs rings, i mean when ever i turned it over i never did hear the valves hit the pistons or anything, but who knows the guy who i bought it from could have already bent them that way i cant tell you know. the thing im pissed off most about is that i cant get ahold of the guy and i know he probably wont give me my money back, but im swaping in a ca here in about a month or 2. if i take off the timing cover do i have to take off the oil pan and the head, or just the oil pan? it looks like if i pull the timing cover off with the oil pan its still gonna mess with the head gasket. what woud you guys do? try and fix this motor or buy a new gasket set for the old motor that runs?

Damn, with the plugs out the motor should turn over WAY easy. Like using your hand on the crank pulley. ALways set the engine to TDC by the crank pulley not the cam gear. At TDC on the crank, the cam lobes on the first cylinder should face away from each other.
