I have a ka24e...today it was ticking really bad, sounded like it was coming from the head. Once I let it warm up and was driving it around for a little, the noise went away.

I am going to pull the valve cover, maybe the lifters are a little loose?

If that is the case do I just tighten them up?

Anyways if I pull the cover, do I need to get a new gasket for it?

All I have are sockets, no RTV, no gaskets. Will I be ok?

Any advice?

Thanks

Btw. Oil levels are great. Motul full synthetic done 1,000Km ago. I also know that my 3rd injector is leaking. I am getting all new o-rings for all 4 of them tomorrow from Nissan.

probably want new gasket. Anything with gasket once taken off.. personally I'd change it.

Hope you can get your problem fixed~! GL!

well... when you get a chance maybe get some gaskets.. I don't think it'll mess up anything... but you don't want to drive around with any minor leaks.

I don't think its major major problem but something I would do when I can get the gasket.

ok so I pulled the valve cover..everything looked good.

I noticed my injectors are all leaking from the fuel rail. Could a fuel problem caused the ticking?

What is the cause for ticking lifters?

carbon buildup, worn components. prob not the injectors causing it but i would take care of that.

I have a motul engine cleaner that I have yet to run. That should help clean it up a little. I am getting new o rings tomorrow from Nissan, going to do a head gasket as well and helicoil the 2 bolts that the previous owner fudged.

Anything else that I should take care of?

I have babied it ever since I got it about 1 month ago.

I have never over-revved the motor or pushed it very hard at all. Motor has Motul Full synthetic. The ticking is now intermittent. Sometimes it gets really loud, sometimes I can;t hear it.

Any ideas?

Everything was tight and looked ok. All the lifter arms were tight, nothing was loose.

...

From what I have read it does not sound like a bent valve. I have a motul engine cleaner that I am going to use, get some new plugs and change the oil. Can that possibly help if my lifters are dirty?

motul...thats like lucus engine treatment? if it clears after this application or after five seconds of starting the car its the lifters (made of plastic and broken on left side i think...) if its always on and increases frequancy with rpms its bent valve...sohc's have that prob...http://www.nicoclub.com/articles.php?id=215864

They sell fuel injector cleaner and engine cleaner, as well as oil and gear box fluids.

Well heres the thing, it lasts for a long time, I always warm the car up and the ticking stays. If I push the throttle the ticking gets faster as the rmps climb.

Some times there is no tick at all. Then it will come back.

So if I take the valve cover off, all I have to do is unbolt the rocker arms? Then proceed to clean the lifters as mentioned in that guide?

If I run the engine cleaner and the tick is still there, I will try cleaning the lifters. How do I replace a bent valve?

Alright so I guess I do have the "sticky lifter" syndrome. After the car was able to warm up the noise just went away.

So my plan this weekend is to flush her out, new plugs. I am going to clean the lifters as well. How hard is it to remove the lifters from the head? Just pop the valve cover off and unbolt?

Are you sure it was ticking? ticking shouldn't go away, it should just get faster as you rev your engine..Piston slap will go away as the enigine warms up

Yes the noise increased with the revs. The noise matched the speed of the engine. Once I was driving around for 10-15 minutes at operating temperature the noise disappeared.

My KA24DE does that, when it over heats. The hotter the engine is, and the more I accelerate the louder and disturbing the sounds gets.

i have a ka24de and it makes the same sound, always has. i used a stethascope on the valve cover and the sound was coming from the timing chain move the scope a few inches away sound went away, never had any failures car runs fine just a little noisy

It was the lifters, the cleaner fixed the problem. This was not a faint tick, it was very noticeable, and quite loud.

I also found out that my timing is advanced all the way, to compensate for my super stretched chain.

Time to rebuild!
