I've recently had a problem with my car. Its a 1990 240SX KA24E Automatic. I was going uphill, i guess the hill might have been around 35-40degrees uphill. I was running around 55mph, in OD, my RPMS were around 2600 i believe. The traffic in front of me started to speed up, and i did too cuz the speed limit was 65, i gave it enough gas to get it to go into 3rd gear, well it didnt feel like it was getting enough power, i just figured it was a steep hill. I gave it a little more gas, and i dont honestly know if it changed into 2nd gear, or stayed in third. But the RPMS were around 4600 at a little over 55mph. My car started slowing down, the RPMs and the MPH were both decreasing. I floored the car because i had no idea why it was slowing down. No response, it felt like i let off the gas and was letting it roll to a stop. I didnt notice any gear shifting, it just sounded like engine braking. My car rolled all the way down to about 15mph, meanwhile i still had it floored. And then it shifted and took off again.

Ive never had the problem before, and ive never heard of it. I had about 3-5 gallons of gas in the car, so there should have been plenty, but even so, there was no irregular sounds. No sputtering, no screeching, squealing. I had my headlights on, and my radio on like 5/100 and there was no power loss to either. Like i said, it just sounded like i let off the gas and it rolled to a stop...

What in the world could this have been? I've never seen or heard of this before. I do have a semi-faulty fuel injector (#3, 1 being closest to the front of the car), it has an extremely small leak, just barely gets the injecter wet after about 3 hous of driving.

The day all of this happened, i had been on the road between 30minutes to an hour, the car was warm, and running fine. I didnt drive it very agressive, just once or twice in the powerband but that would have been at least 20minutes before this happened. The car does idle rough, and stalled one time, but that was in the winter, i just had put it into gear and it was too cold and died. But never had any mechanical problems driving it. Its all stock as well.

Please help, thank you.

that would be a short in your speed cut-off sensor (i dunno where it is on an auto) mine does that all the time (5 speed tho) and all i do is downshift for a sec, then upshift back to where i was, and its fine.

Thanks, I'll check that out..would make since too cuz i think if i just let off the gas i wouldnt downshift have downshifted till about the speed i slowed down to.

Having a short in that sensor, is that something can can cause a huge problem though, or would it just cause the occasional stall? just wondering if it needs fixed asap or if it can wait.

well, i would fix it as soon as u can manage it, its not fun to uncontrollably slow down on the interstate.

was it shifting, or was it stuck in one gear?

It was stuck in 3rd gear. The shifting correcting the problem makes since. I have AT trans. and it slowed down until about 17mph, which is my 3rd gears min. speed, which woulda made it shift into 2nd, and thats when i got power back. If it happens again, i can turn OD off, or put it in 2nd if im under 55 mph, and it should stop it.

I havent had time to get this fixed, or looked at, cuz i have a family member using it for work when im at school (recent loss of his car). It hasnt happened again though, im wondering if it was a possible fluke.
