Removal of the plunger and check valve is pretty simple and straightforward, just requires a little patience.
I'm currently doing a simple technical writeup for my website on how to disassemble and clean the hydraulic lifters including pictures. I have found that the main culprit for failure of the lifter is within the checkvalve and carbon thats normally formed by high mileage engines using dino oil.
For our solid lifter setup, we're looking at resleeving the lifter body but haven't yet decided what adjusters we will be using.
I have heard of someone removing the lifter internals (checkvale plunger & spring), threading the top of the lifter for an adjuster that will rest up against the original plunger with great success. So I would have to say that could be a simpler option for some.
