So i bought a 89 coupe and the dude said it has a blown headgasket. Im gunna replace it but i got a few questions.

(please bare with me as im completly new to working on cars and thats part of the reason i bought this car was to learn)

Ok, so ill need a new gasket. I was thinking about the cometic but im open to opnions, like i said idk wtd im doing.

Headsteads: ive been having trouble locating these and reviews on which to buy, how many do i need?

Is there anything else that is neccessary or should be replaced while im doing the headgasket job? Im gunna take the head to a machine shop to make sure it isnt warped.

Is there a thorough write up somewhere? I promise ive searched but I havnt found much of anything that has been much help. I also have a haynes manual but it isnt of much help either.

please be easy on me haha and thanks in advance!

For headstuds, you can call up the local Nissan dealership and order some, that's what I did when I had to replace my headgasket.

Also, I'd recommend replacing all the vacuum lines and gaskets.Like the intake manifold gasket, exhaust manifold gasket, and things like that.Make sure to replace your valve seals too, might as well since the head is out.

Take very good pictures of your vacuum lines before you take them all apart, it'll help you tons when you need to put them back together.Or replace them one by one, there will be less confusion.

Good luck, and remember to take your time!

ams performance has arp head studs for the sohc, also i am a technician anyway...sooo my personal opinion would be to like Razi said replace intake, exhaust gaskets, water pump and thermostat, valve seals, and especialy on the single cam as far as alot of the threads up here it would be good time to take care of timming tensioner and guides. vacuum lines ect.... there are just some good ideas but again it all comes down to how deep your pockets are.

Okay....

I just posted a thread on how to remove a KA24DE head, your procedure is going to be very similar. You only have one cam though, so it will be easier on your end.
If you want, I will honestly take apart a KA24E I have for a HOW-TO Video of that. I'm sure it is VERY VERY Similar.

Gaskets - YOU DO NOT need to go Cometic. If you are NOT going to throw a ton of boost on it, you can use standard OEM replacement gaskets.

Head Studs - Again, you do NOT need ARP head STUDS, you can use head BOLTs (OEM type) which are extermely cost efficient. They are about $50 and I can hook you up with everything you need if you want.

Shoot me an E-Mail at [email protected] if you need help or need information on parts. I do these things for a living right now. So I can help with ANYTHING you need.
