i am in the process of pulling my engine from my 89 hatch so i can replace the rod bearings but i was wondering can i just pull the motor and leave the transmission in there, or should i pull it as a whole?

Pull it all out as a whole. Much easier.

put a jack stand under the trans and leave it in. or you could just do the bearings in the car by removing the engine cross member and control arm assm.
