Hey guys I had a quick question. I'm currently looking at a 89 240 hatch 5-speed and it needs a engine rebuild. It died at 210,000 and the body is in really good shape all stock for only 400 bucks :bigthumb: The transmission is still good and the clutch but I was wondering how much a stock rebuild would be on the KA24e. Maybe some of you guys have done it and could give me an idea? My plan was to get it rebuilt and later drop a cam and rods, pistons in but that in the future. SO anybody got some info?

Thanks in advance! :bigthumb:

Depends on what you buy.

It looks okay, just make sure you know what piston and bearing sizes you are going to use before ordering. Those pistons look like cast NPR's, so don't expect to make 500hp with them, but you might get somewhere around 275whp if you boost it with a good tune free of detonation. Stock block ka24de's with stock cast pistons have pushed 375+whp, but they have also failed at less than 300whp, so a good tune is paramount. If you aren't boosting it, then I don't think those pistons will have any problems as you probably will make less than 160whp NA on a single cammer with: bolt ons, minor head and valve work, header, higher compression, pump gas--and that is realistic seeing as that motor makes about 123 whp stock. Don't get me wrong, though, GT3 ka24e's make 300whp NA; but their life span is measured in hours.

And then there are those timing chain guides in that rebuild kit, are they plastic backed? That is one of the main things that wears out on these motors. Likely won't happen for many thousands of miles, but that is my main criticism about the kit. Later single cammers in 96-97 pickup trucks like mine have bulletproof metal backed guides, they are a common upgrade many owners install on the earlier engines.

If you want to eventually boost it get some ARP head studs as well. No boost, then I would at least recommend new head bolts; but even NA you can't go wrong with studs.
