New to the board and looking or a little help with my build. I just got my sohc back from the machine shop and it has been bored 40 over. I got matching 40 over pistons and rings. My question is what is the gap supposed to be. New to this whole engine building thing so any help would be great. thanks

You need to get a FSM or other aftermarket book, it will have all the tolerences and specifications in it. To build that engine you need more than just the ring gap.

Whoever supplied the pistons and rings should have that information.

I believe that it depends on the piston grade that was originally in the engine. I don't know. Anyone done this before?

I was told by the manufacturer that the gap should be the same as the stock rings as the engine has been bored? Is this right?

In case you haven't gotten the information yet, the stock ring gap should be between .0110 - .0169 inches for top compression ring.
