KA24E Oil Pump question

Hi am new here. Nice to meet you all.

I have a 1993 D21 pick-up 4cyl auto 2wd166k on the vehicle

Recently, when I first start the engine, I hear valve train noise ( i suspect) for the first few seconds. Then the oil light goes off and the noise stops.(this also happens if it sits for more than a 1/2 hr after it has stopped) I haven't installed the oil gauge yet (today). I am new to this engine. I am thinking that my pump is worn and can no longer hold its prime and/or on it's way out. Sound right? I was also thinking relief valve maybe sticking? I appreciate any help!ThanksArchAngel

could be the pump or it could just be an old motor. "why doesnt he just tell me what it could be instead of this old motor garbo?" thats what i would think if i were you but its really complex. any one of your main/rod bearings could be leaking from excessive clearance. the lash adjusters(aka lifters) could be shot. so many possibilities.

what i reccomend...hope that its just a little sludge issue. pour a half quart of atf in your oil and a health splash of kerosene. run engine for 30 min. do oil change. use decent oil. being an old motor you dont want to switch to synthetic. just go with a good blend like valvoline durablend.

problem may disappear suddenly or gradually or not at all. we are hoping its the first possibility.

Update. I replaced the oil pump, an hr ago. So it took care of the problem. In that department. lol for the time being. Now i just have to properly time the thing. The haynes manual sucks in that department. Luckily this forum is pretty darn packed full of knowledge. I think I am a tooth off. I have to advance the dist full advance to achieve base timing 10 btdc. Oh well hahaThanks for the help man! ARA

no prob, i have done a million and i still have never got it on the first try. even the fsm is not that great. just keep trying untill she runs right without fully turning the dist.
