Hey guys I'm having some annoying problems with my ka, it starts right up, but dies unless I hold the gas, and when I do hold the gas my car constantly misfires.

Previous, before the problem, installed a high performance fuel pump, new battery, alternator

When the problem did happen, my car started misfiring and acting all weird like it does now...Eventually i got to the stop light down the street to my house and it flooded itself....everytime i stepped on the gas, my car would instantly shut off....eventually i let it sit for a bit...got it home and now its like this...

By the way a friend is holding it at 1k when he starts it...eventually he lets it drop and lets the car idle itself in the video thats when the car is on the verge of killing it self from 24-32 seconds in the video before i say gas it...

I do have CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON =,(

this is a 1990 singlecam by the way. 5speed
all stock

Things I have noticed:
-Misfires constantly if i hold down the gas
-really low idle
-previous spark plugs were black, oily and smelt of fuel
-white smoke shoots from the exhaust
-Oil is typical color, blackish brown, but smells of fuel
-coolant is still very green
-Good spark between all four cylinders

Things I have tried/replaced:
-Cleaned Iacv, aac
-replaced CTS/the idle air temp sensor
-cleaned maf, didnt work so I got a new one and still doesnt work
-new fuel filter
-new fuel pump
-new fuel injecters, with new o-rings
-distributor,distributor cap and rotor
-new ngk wires/ ngk plugs
-fuel injectors/spark plugs
-new oem fuel pump

This has been bugging me for a week in a half now, would love to hear any suggestions or input. Thanks!

Check the FPR. If there is a leak in the FPR, it will suck fuel from the return line back into the intake manifold...then into the engine. Also when the FPR is under no vacuum, there is higher fuel pressure, making it even more richer.

I've never worked on a SOHC, so I don't know where it is, just follow the fuel rail and it should be at one of the ends.

Also, a new fuel pump can kill an old FPR. The new pump will be too powerful for the old FPR and might actually push the diaphragm, causing it to be more richer. This happens quite often with high flow pump, however this could also be the cause with the new OEM pump you have on.

Hmm, I looked up symptoms of a bad FPR and it really sounds like the problem ^.^, however, noob question how would i go about checking it, do i just unplug the vac line and see if fuel is coming out?

Unplug it and see if fuel leaks out. Also check the vacuum line as well for fuel (smaller of the 2 hoses connected to it), there should be zero traces of gasoline.

Another thing you can do is, unplug the vacuum line and cap it off or get someone to stick their finger on it and try to start it and see how it runs.

Also, check fuel pressure while it's running, IIRC it should read at 38 psi at idle and 43 under no vacuum (WOT).

If it's higher, the fuel is pushing the FPR spring.

The misfiring could be from the FPR, but probably not the white smoke and the flooded plugs. Usually oil on your plugs means you've got a bad tube seal and white smoke is from burning coolant. You should try to check the tube seal for those problems.

Okay so i unplugged the FPR and it leaked just a little bit from my fuel return line, meaning my FPR is bad right?
and when we tried unplugging the vac line with my finger when we turned on the car, my idle didn't really change at all.

I am going to replace plugs because they are fouled now (black with carbon over them) and oil change and change the FPR, HOPEFULLY THIS FIXES IT ALL ^.^ Ill repost later on to tell you guys the results

Im a little confused we checked my friends return line on the fpr on his 240 and like mine it plooped out a good amount of fuel. My vacuum line also was sucking a air too so it seemed good and was not leaking any fuel. Is my FPR bad?

When you first take off the return line, a little bit of fuel usually does come out.

Keep the return line on and check fuel pressure.

Also check the FPR with a vacuum gun and see if it actually holds vacuum.

So i replaced my FPR and still same thing =/, would the fact that my oil has some fuel in it, and the fact that my plugs are black affect how it runs?

And by the way we checked everything under the valve cover, everything seems in place, as in timing chain is not loose, timing chain guides are there, and all my valves/pistons seem good. So thats a relief its nothing too major. I also took a picture of my timing chain not sure if it matters or not but here....

Why would you replace the FPR without testing it?

Anyways, do a fuel pressure test if you haven't so far. Let's see if it actually holds pressure.

Okay so i changed my oil/spark plugs/FPR and replaced vac lines and check for grounding issues and started my baby, and ran perfect, even when i revved it was no longer back firing, however, i soon realized that i forgot to plug in the MAF...
AS soon as i plugged in the maf my car started acting all s*** again, and i have CEL probably the MAF wiring because i tried replacing the MAF already...

Alright so my timing is on point but my friend says my car is in limp mode, we tried switching out the mafs and both mafs have the same reading, how exactly do we test the maf with a multimeter? And

The FSM will show you how to diagnose and test it.

Try adding another ground from the MAF, splice it into the wire to the body.
