a buddy of mine and i went to check out a 89 240sx today in va beach with 205k miles on it. engine was still strong, but there was a whizzing/whirring/humming noise that occured upon acceleration. it came from front passenger side. injectors had some leaking around them, could it be something with the fuel?

Yikes, leaky injectors can be very dangerous. I had leaky injectors for 1 day and every time I was following some arse that throw's a cigarette out the window I wanted to follow them and slash their tires for almost potentially blowing me up...USE THE ASH TRAY.

Anyways, I don't really know what that rattling could be...I've fixed a few rattles in my car...Is that one a KA24E or DE? Check the belts and check to see if it's coming from under the valvecasing...

it's not a rattle. it's a whizzing/whirring/humming sound like he said. if it were a rattle it'd be a bit easier to find.

and yes, the belts were fine. there was a slight power steering leak around the reservoir and a little residue covering the pump itself, but nothing fresh. and there wasn't any apparent valve casing noise. i believe on an idle free-rev that it would have made the crazy sound if it were either of the 2 things you suggested. but the fact that it had to be moving AND be on the gas, really messes with my head.

in my opinion, it sounded like a real real loud fuel pump issue, but it was coming from the front of the car, so that kind of destroys that theory.

any help is appreciated!

It may be the power steering pump, especially if you notice the noise growing louder when you turn the steering wheel hard to one side or the other.

It could also be the alternator if that doesnt pan out.

if it were the alternator it would make the sound at idle, correct?

as for the power steering pump. i did notice a slight residue/leak, but the reservoir was pretty full, not excessively low.

but like i said, it only did it when i was accelerating, not standing still and revving. very weird if you ask me.

well, you see, everything that is run by a belt and pulley is directly connected to your crank.

And when you accelerate, the pulleys move faster and faster, right? Both the alternator and steering pump are powered by pulleys (duh).

Thus, when you accellerate the whining noise could be anything driven by a pulley. I would eliminate the problems you can see (the leak being a clue) and then move on to unseen issues if it doesnt work.

okay, that makes sense. but if that were the base, revving the car while sitting still would recreate the same noise. and it's not doing that.

did you try turning the wheel side to side to reproduce the noise? Perhaps you are mistaken about the accellerating thing...

you may be correct, i don't exactly remembering noting it when the wheel was or was not turned. only thing i recall was as soon as i let off the gas, the noise IMMEDIATELY went away.

That noise is usually one of the two IF you hear it coming from the front of the car. Just check them both out, it should be one of the two.
