Well, I just posted the other day about the CA18DET, and was floating still between it and SR20... now, my KA has started knocking and Im afraid its gonna go any day now... this is my only form of transportation... Now, Ive never taken a loan out before... saved and bought my first car 4 years ago, been trading up and saving since then... Now, it looks like Im going to HAVE TO.... I know I could rebuild the KA24 for a bit, but Ive been desiring more power lately anyways.... Now, is it possible to go about getting a loan for something like this? Id prefer to stay away from credit cards with ungodly interests... I would prefer to pay as much as possible monthly for my engine to pay it off soon. Are loans like this even available? What can I expect as far as interest rates, and if I dont have any credit built up, could I even get one?

Lastly... how much can I expect to pay total and whats my cheapest yet smartest route? I need reliability but Im dying for a CA18DET... that 1.8L of free-revving power just makes me excited!

If you are really on a budget, you can get a used KA24E short block for about $200 or a complete used motor for about $350.

Well, I am on a budget, but thats 350 bucks + time gone to waste since im just going to swap to a ca18det by summer anyways... that 350 bucks pays MORE than interest on a loan.. just my thinking anyways.

If you have the credit/income, you can get a loan for almost anything.

Depending on your credit, term, where you get the loan, you could see anywhere from 3% APR to 18% APR.

Cheapest way would be buy an engine set and do everything your self.... could get it done for $1500. If your gonna buy stuff, figure atleast $2000 to $3000, depending on how much you want to do

You can take a loan out againt the value of your vehicle, but I doubt that will be enough money to pay for the project. Do you have any money put away right now?

I have a couple hundred, but not a real large amount ya know. If I could do the entire swap for 1500, that'd be great... Im looking at sites now, and they all appear to be atleast a grand for the motorset, and I still have to buy a radiator, downpipe, and intercooler... not to mention water pumps and all the small things. The thing is, if I could do it for 1500 now, I could add on to it after I pay the stinking loan off ASAP.

The stock radiator is the same as the CA radiator. Since you're on a tight budget, I would buy a very complete motorset with intercooler piping and intercooler, maf, and the other usual stuff so you will have everything you need.

If your credit is ok, or can get a cosigner, you could get an unsecured loan. Years ago, I got a $3000 loan with out any collateral for a new head on my DSM.

Rock on... I didnt think about a cosigner.... I wouldnt want 3000, but if I could gnab a 2000 dollar loan.. that would rock... Do insecured loans have higher interest rates?

yes - the bank is taking a greater risk. I could bore you with the finance theory behind it, but I won't

I was in your exact same situation before i decided to just sell my mr2 to pay for the motor. The bank wouldnt give me any less than 3 grand with a cosigner on an unsecured loan. It was something like $81/mo for 4 years. then they suggested getting a credit card if i wanted any less....f*** that.

Couldn't you simply take what you didnt need and pay the loan? Or was the interest on that too killer? I wonder how those people get those 0% interest credit cards... even if it was a month without interest... if I could use that to take care of the small things, life would be easier

yes you can do that but also make sure there arent any fees for paying off the loan early.
