ka24e head check

I bent up my valves and dented my pistons a while back and decided on spending $60 to grab a head at the junkyard just to hold me off until i can swap in a built dohc.

My question is that is there anything i can check before removing the head completely off the block to see if there are any problems? Maybe something i can look at or something with just the valve cover off? I have almost NO spare time so I would hate to spend time removing a head only to find out that its no good.

Any help is appreciated!
