Does anyone out there know how many head castings there are for a SOHC Ka24 and what the differences are? I have two heads, one is cracked. I ordered a new/reman from my work specific for an 89 240sx. Most everything is the same between the two except on the back side of the head the last cap for the cam journal extends all the way past where the valve cover would bolt on and is flush with the back of the head. I think this head might be for a pick-up version of the KA. The old head has a number on the right side in the front stamped 40F 2R. The new head is sramped 40F 6R. I would like to know if I can use this head and use the cap from the old head or if I should return it.

you are right they did make a different head for the pickup version, what exactly are you replacing the head on? a 240sx or a pickup. if its different i wouldn't really risk it i would look for the same one.

Its a 240. It just sucks though. I got the head months ago and just noticed it. I just now got around to tearing the bottom end out and Im sending it to get Vatted in a few days. I have another engine in the garage but I didnt want to tear it apart. I guess I can return the head and use the money for machine work.

Can you post a picture? I didn't think the PU KA24Es were much different(rear sump, and a few hoses angled here and there)

I already returned the head. But when I go back to work tomorrow I will take some pictures of the parts that are different. The whole intake side of the head is different along with the bolt pattern for the powersteering bracket. This project has been a pain. Three times I have ordered parts for this thing and gotten the wrong stuff.

I actually have a pickup head that I just picked up due to my head being cracked - in a very random spot too.... The only thing that I think might be different other than the last cam cap and the power steering bracket mounting is that there MAY be a different profiled cam in there. I need to confirm this b/c I have my old 240sx cam that I can easily swap in there when I change the cam cap. Everything else is identical between the two heads though. And the power steering isn't a deal breaker in my opinion. The power steering bracket still mounts up with 2 bolts - it is just missing it's 3rd bolt. This could be a problem in the long run, but I really don't think it will affect the stability of the bracket.
