Ok here it is: the final step. Im seriously dreading taking this one too. I have done a lot to my car myself in the 8 years ive had it. I swapped camshafts with rocker arms and put on an adjustable cam sprocket myself. Ive pulled the transmission and installed my Centerforce clutch. Ive installed my Eibach sportlines myself. But now the granddaddy of them all. Im considering pulling the engine to rebuild her. Im not a mechanic. I didnt go to school for working on cars. I am, however, mechanically inclined. I have the ability to take 2 weeks off of work (vacation) so that i have the time to do this. But my question, exactly how hard is this? I basically understand what is involved in pulling the motor. I could bolt things togeter or take them apart. But im mostly concearned about pitfalls. How do i pull the flywheel off to change my rear main seal w/o an impact wrench? Should i pull the crank and replace the bearings? If i put in higher compression pistons (the 9.1/1 Nissan motorsports ones), would i have to have the whole assembly balanced again? How high could i go with my compression to be useable on 91 octane pump gas? Could i get some forged pistons to go to 10/1? or even 11/1? How do you determine if you need to replace your oil pump? And then how do you prime it? I dont expect answers to all of these, but any insight from other shadetree mechanics would be greatly appreciated. And im sorry, if there is a FAQ on rebuilding a KA, i mustve missed it.
