SOHC motor converted to DOHC head with SOHC short block.

Things you’ll need…• Factory Service Manual (FSM) & Nissan Parts Dealer• DOHC head, intake manifold, exhaust manifold & down pipe, and Top Timing Chain Cover. Also top radiator hose and intake plumbing. Be sure that all vacuum lines intact and accounted for. Make sure to have brake booster vacuum line and fuel lines going down from fuel rail or else you will have to replace it. And it doesn’t hurt to have the DOHC’ s coolant nipple from the lower timing chain cover. Cut off injector plugs from the DOHC harness.• SOHC - ECU• Head Bolts• Head Gasket• DOHC Timing Set (Chains, Guides, & Tensioners )• Special Tools: Pulley Remover, Torque Wrench, Sheet Metal Snips, Bench Grinder, Reciprocating Saw ( Saws-All )• RTV Sealant (look in FSM)• Sheet Metal about 22 gauge• ½ ounce Marijuana,
http://www.thehun.net , Water, CD Player with Bob Marley, 20 Shrooms• Maintenance Items: Spark Plugs, Spark Cables, Coolant, 4 quarts oil & filter (cheap oil to be able to clean your system out after running)• Car Ramps or Car Jack and Jack Stands• Wire Connectors (of your choice) • (May not be needed. Step 23. ) 3/8” X 3/8’ Brass Barb to MIP adapter (Watts Parts No. A294)
Take a look at the routes of coolant, fuel, and vacuums on the SOHC engine while it is still virgin. I will describe my emission control removal in notes of the article. Because I removed all emissions I really won’t be able to help with other vacuum related questions. Car needs to be on ramps with a block to stop rolling or on jack stands for the exhaust side of the swap.
Steps1. Drain coolant and crank engine for thirty seconds or so to push rest of coolant out. May as well flush it right?2. Drain oil and leave oil filter on as it is a lot easier to get to with the head and manifold off.3. Disconnect battery and hell, pull it out, the battery tray is a good tool box. HAHA I’m so funny.4. !!!!!!! Remove top and bottom radiator hoses, intake plumbing, fan shroud, clutch fan.5. If you are able to get the exhaust manifold along with the down pipe then just cut your existing SOHC down pipe in roughly the same area with Saws-All. Then just unbolt the EGR tube or cut if you don’t care about it. Now just unbolt the manifold from the head as described in the FSM and pull out the manifold plus cut down pipe. *NOTE: SOHC down pipe does not work with DOHC manifold.6. Now the fun part ELECTRICALS ! It is your job to find all grounds and wire connectors. I had to use a small knife for the pins that hold connectors together. Find a way to mark connections or just take a lot of pictures.7. Use some vise grips on the fuel line that comes from the metal tube from below unless you like to sniff gas. Remove the lines at the top end but do be careful as they tend to dry rot and they are a ***** to get off anyhow.8. Remove vacuums that connect to the intake manifold, so that it will be easier to install the new stuff. Now marking and labeling vacuums sucks because no tape wants to stick to them. This is where memory, pictures, and an FSM come in hand.9. Remove the throttle cables from the throttle body (two if you have cruise control).10. Marijuana break: 4 minutes and 20 seconds. Wash hands before lighting especially if you have gas on your hands.11. Use wrench to turn motor to first cylinder TDC as described in FSM.12. Now unbolt the valve cover and marvel at what you have started. Now is a good time to find a way to keep up with different bolts, such as a hobby tray with dividers.13. Remove the bolts that connect the SOHC head’s cover to the bottom timing chain cover.14. Remove the timing chain gear from the head as described in the FSM.15. Unbolt the head as described in the FSM.16. Remove with a friend and place under your pillow and maybe the EBay fairy will get off their lazy *** and give you some money for it.17. Remove all belts and drain the power steering fluid before removing the power steering pump. *NOTE: Power steering will not fit after head swap.18. Remove lower timing chain cover as described in the FSM and don’t forget about the bolts that go through the oil pan in to the cover either. Also be careful not to mess with distributor.19. Remove timing components.20. Test fit passenger side timing chain tensioner by installing it and putting lower timing chain cover onto block. You should be able to see one of the angles that it needs to be ground down on. It will have a substantial amount of metal removed but don’t worry.21. Either have the top cover’s distributor whole welded up or plug somehow. I will try sheet metal and RTV sealant. And so far so good!22. Replace oil filter now before you forget.23. Also with the head off, you need to begin piecing together a PCV line, unless your DOHC line will work. This goes from the lower timing chain cover to the tube that connects each intake runner, on the bottom of the manifold. Pictures available. Each end of the hose will have to be different sizes. I hacked up some emission control hoses and have this working. See pictures.24. Replace the coolant nipple on the SOHC’s lower cover to the DOHC nipple, requires RTV sealant. I’m not sure it an OEM hose will work afterwards, I bought some instead.25. Place head gasket on and with the gasket extends over the block, in the front, cut it off as it will not fit between the two covers. 26. Place head gasket down and with a friend put head, intake manifold, and exhaust manifold onto the block and be sure that the nipples on the block are in line with the appropriate holes of head.27. Follow FSM directions for instillation of your new head bolts. 28. Now with head in place and your lower cover fitting over the ground down tensioner, put the front cover onto the DOHC heads front and you will now see why you need to cut the head gasket and why you have to make a sheet metal adapter for the two covers to work properly. 29. Use common sense and help with my pictures to make an adapter. Take your time and don’t eyeball everything either, use a tape measure and sharpe marker.30. It is hard to get the top cover in place with the adapter there but its possible, line up the studs on the head with their holes on the cover; with a towel and hammer tap each side equally; going side to side until it is flush with head.31. Remove two covers and install the rest of the timing set as described in the FSM. For cams’ TDC setting go to:
http://jimwolftechnology.com/w...E.PDF32. !!!!!!!! Cover instillation with RTV sealant.33. Install valve cover as described in FSM. Pour some oil onto cams for initial lube upon startup.34. DOHC injectors require a different wiring harness connector than those of the SOHC. So I cut off the SOHC injector plugs and wired in the DOHC injector plugs. The red wires are a different gauge than the coupled wire. Match the wires and connect them. Do it the right way and not with just electrical tape, damn man. Rest the cut plugs on the injectors to be sure of wire length when connecting. *NOTE: SOHC wiring harness has a plug in-between cylinders 2 & 3’s injector plugs, so be careful not to cut that one off. I have no idea what it goes too!35. I bought two cable holders and mounted them at the two available holes on the fuel rail to keep the wiring harness off of the valve cover and to keep the connections from being pulled on.36. Connect remaining harness connections, fuel lines, and vacuum lines. Don’t forget about the big ground going to the intake manifold like I did. 37. Install crank pulley and put on all belts, as told by FSM.38. Install radiator hoses and the heater core line (to the firewall).39. Throttle cable has to cross the valve cover to reach
*NOTE: Cruise control cable will have to be lengthened.40. Fill with oil.41. Reconnect battery and pray.42. Try to crank it. 43. Now install coolant.
