I just bought another S13 and the engine is fairly high at 215xxx.

I dont have time to hassle with a rebuild grocery list of parts so I think I would just find a crate motor.

I have about $2k for a new motor and I can probably find someone to install it for me for a grand.

Is there any reputable websites or places I can find that sells crate motors?

Right now my car is running. Really good too! But I need some info for Future Reference.

Thanks

AMS used to sell crate engines, I don't think they do anymore though. Here's the only place I found, it's going to cost more than 1k though.

You might as well find a used engine in your area, buy a rebuild kit, then take it to a machine shop and have them assemble it. It'd be cheaper than buying one online. Besides, shipping would be killer.

Is there any particular reason you want to stay stock? You could have a shop do a CA18 swap and have a reliable, higher power motor for the same or maybe even less money than you're talking about spending on a stock KA.

I'm not a CA evangelist or anything. I still drive a KA; I just know I'd do a swap way before I spent 3 grand on a KA.

The only places I can think of off the top of my head are factory Nissan distributors, and places like Jasper. Check Ebay if you want, not sure about that one myself but it is just an idea. Or a reputable local engine shop might be able to rebuild a used one for you.

As a CA user for 2+ yrs I'd like to vouch against it as a reliable/no hastle swap. These are old engines and the quality of the engines still being imported is only decreasing. When I took my CA apart around the 2 year mark the cylinders were found to be out of round and the entire rebuild would have cost over 2k. They are great little motors in my opinion, if you have the patience/money for a project whose perk isn't power or reliability per dollar but uniqueness.

That being said I also wouldn't advise a crate engine. I looked for one last year when I needed a new engine solution and they were just too expensive. If you have the money and just want a reliable 240, it can be a good route. But honestly which of us fit those two conditions? Either you don't have the money and then used engines can be a great solution, or you have the money and want a fast car.

What I did was found an engine on craigslist for $350, compression tested it before buying it (easy), bought it, refreshed it
-cleaned the hell out of it
-new front/rear main seals
-new oil pan gasket
-spark plugs/wires
-clutch
and installed it. All in all it cost me under $500 and will definitely hold me over until I build up the other KA I have in the garage. If the beater engine ends up running good when it comes time to put in the turbo engine, I'll have an extra engine in the garage that is definitely good in case of emergencies. It's a win - win.

Good luck.
